In case anyone needs to replace their ABS system computer, before you pay over $1000.00 for the ones on Ebay listed for Ferrari's, I think (I hope?) there's a WAY cheaper alternative. If you look on the side of the computer box, it will have "ATE controller E5LC-2C219-AA". If you just search that you will find what appears to be the exact same box for late 80's Lincoln Continentals for $60.00 or less. FYI it's the same computer in both the 348 and the 355. A slight savings to be had there...

Gerryd...seems like he should buy these and mark them up 1000%.....then you would be happily consistent in your posts, right? In addition, since its from a Lincoln it could be the "black box stopping kit".....or "smoother stops just like a Lincoln". I would pay $1500 , it just needs to be marketed by a master snake oil salesman and have a dedicated following of people that say it really helped their car stop better.

Wait, reading the first post, you implied that you think it's the same, or did I misread that? Did it work? Don't need one yet but always good to know there are alternatives.

Don't know yet... I ordered it. In the pictures it looks exactly the same... same plug fitting, same numbers on the case, and ABS systems would not necessarily have to be car model specific. I ordered one .. we'll see. Of course I ordered it 'cause my ABS ain't workin' and all my relays etc seem to check out OK but I don't know for sure that it's the computer at fault. For $35 I'm willing to take a shot. If it doesn't work, then I'll really be scratching my head. I'll let you all know.

Don't know if you've tried this or not but I know there is a test fuse under the carpeting in the front. If you plug a fuse in, it run a diagnostic test on the ABS and might tell you what your problem is. There are threads on this out there.

I found it by accident while I was replacing a part on the ventilation system. Thought it was suppose to have a fuse in it. After reading up on it, I found out it was only for testing. If you leave it in, it will always show a fault after the test is completed.

Yep, but that only works if you're getting a blinking ABS warning light. Mine is on all the time. Turned out someone in the past had cut the wire to the warning light. When I installed my new brake pads, they are so much better than the old ones, I can now do a panic stop tire skid, which is how I learned the ABS wasn't working. Digging into the relays, fuses, etc. I found the cut wire... cute. Using the work shop manual, I've ruled out the easy stuff, the computer was next on the list, but I wasn't too keen on dropping over $1000.00 (some guy on Ebay has one listed for $1800.00) on something I wasn't sure would help. $35.00, on the other hand, is so stupidly cheap, it's almost disposable.
I had thought about doing a video on what I've learned about the ABS system and the various components up there in the front trunk... let me know if there's any interest.
Having (hopefully) struck gold on the ABS computer front, my next thought was.. could the engine management computer also be shared with another car... the answer is no. The ECU computer is Bosch 0 261 200 489. If you put that on Ebay, you get several matches for the 1st 7 numbers, but those last 3 seem to be 348 specific. The good news for 348'ers is there are only those 3 computers on our cars to worry about in the future, and there is at least one listing of a company in FL that will repair a bad engine ECU. I figure because of that in 20 yrs there will still be 348's on the road (gas will be $200 a galleon), while something like an Italia, which is saturated with computers and electronic do-dads will be only suitable as a lawn ornament.

The ATE Teves system is modular and used on a number of cars in Europe, the Ford Sierra and Granada from the late 80s also use the same system, and have a visually identical ecu to those in the photos.

My concern would be calibration, the braking dynamics and loading of a big, heavy front engined car will be very different to a light mid engined Ferrari.

If the stickers were identical then great, but they clearly are not, sure it will plug in but do you really want to be messing with a system that unloads your brakes when your foot is flat to the pedal in an emergency?

After installing the Lincoln unit, even though it turned out the computer was not the cause of my system problems, I was too lazy to change back to the Ferrari unit. I've been running with the Lincoln unit for some time and the antilock function works just fine.
