In this news letter Michael Sheehan list the "best" models from various periods starting with the 246 Dino's going to the present. When he got to the 348/355 era he completely ignored these models and focused on the 360 as a 'best buy'.

Probably due to the high (even for Ferrari) maintenance costs.

Or due to the fact that there are zillions of 360s on the market and they can be bought so cheap.

I agree about the 360's production numbers making it a good buy, but I think it's no secret that he doesn't care for the 348, especially in terms of styling. He likes to point out the maintenance issues of both the 348 and the 355, but I think if one isn't smart while purchasing a Modena, you can end up spending a crapload on one of those as well.

case in point. A co-worker bought a salvage 360 ("minor" front body damage) last year.
The F1 trans has failed numerous times and he felt shipping it to Calif. was cheaper that getting it worked on in Seattle. Well many months later and about $10,000 later it is supposedly fixed, but who knows. Sure he got the car cheap, but look at the headaches and it will be a tough sell. He's admitted that he may not break even. I think he spent less than $50k for it last year.

I think it depends on the commission he wants to earn - 360's sell for higher prices. :p

In reality, the 360's are a downward priced car, so why buy them now? The 355's are very well priced for what you get and there are plenty of very well maintained or upgraded cars out there. This is the value range currently, IMO.

348's are not for everybody, but if you man up, that's the model to get. :D There are some great cars out there, like Bushwacker's old car, now being sold by copterjon.

The point is that the author's bias gets in the way of facts. I knew about the disrespect he has for the 348, but to toss the 355 into that mess is a real mistake. Maybe he didn't want to deal with the 348 crowd again so he lumped the 355s in there with them as the misenthropic iconoclasts we are so we wouldn't be alone. ;)

I am trying to respect the guy, but sheit like this really pizzes me off. Okay, maybe he doesn't know enough about the cars to comment rationally. Yeah, that's it...

In my neighborhood we call the 360 the mortgage brokers car so you can imagine what kind of maintenance those have had once the economy changed. :)

About 3 years ago I started reading about the different Ferrari’s and their maintenance issues. In his November 2002, Michael Sheehan,s article had nothing but doom and gloom for anything else other than the 360. I can say this freely Sheehan scared the living jeebies out of me. I thought that there was no way in the world any sensible person would buy a car that cost so much money and needed so much more for maintenance. So why in the heck am I looking for a Ferrari. So I started looking at Porsche. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest engineered pieces of machinery ever built. Good deals where to be found every where and their reputation in unquestionable. But my heart and soul wasn’t buying it. A Ferrari is an Icon and I needed more information. This is when I found Ferrari Chat. I constantly read how much you folks loved your cars and yet I read very few horror stories. I decided to talk to mechanics about Ferrari. The all said the identical things. Take care of the car, figure about $1,000.00 to $,1,500.00 per year for maintenance and enjoy your life. I now own a 348 Spyder and I never looked back. Sheehan has caused a lot of turbulence in the Ferrari world and yet he keeps buying and selling them. What’s with that.

Mine may very well be broken. I see the CEL's when I turn the key, but never see the slow downs test. Do they test??

This was me to a T. I ended up buying a Corvette and a Porsche in lieu of what I really wanted, which obviously was an F-car. The negative press and general "knowledge" of Ferrari costs led me to believe I would have to put ownership off until I was super wealthy. Then, I investigated the true reality of things and figured out that my reluctance was truly absurd when I figured over $20K depreciation on my Cayman S in a little over two years! PLUS, in three years of owning the car, I had two $7-800 service bills, so what was I really saving?? $200??? With the bills and the depreciation, I could have covered about four majors on a 348! If I had done this earlier, I would have saved boatloads. Thanks a lot, doom and gloomers.
