The a/c on a 1990 348 that I am trying to buy cuts off after about 30 minutes. Is this part of the dreaded 348 center console issues? And how big of a job is it to fix?

When you say "cuts off", what exactly do you mean? Does the whole system go dead (fan, directional control, temperature control, readout, clock) or does it just stop putting out cold air?

If the whole thing goes dead, I would suspect that the fuse holder for the "hidden fuse" in the front trunk is defective/melted. That's what was wrong with my 348 when I bought it.

If it just stops blowing cold, it might need to be recharged. Or it could be something as simple as an obstruction in the duct to the condenser. Look down inside the opening on the right side of the front bumper to check for this.

    Good luck with your search!

"cuts off" meaning the whole system go dead (fan, directional control, temperature control, readout, clock). I guess this is the same problem with the melted fuse block in my 1990 TR. But in the TR, the windows didn't work either. Let me tell you how much fun it is with 12 cylinders, no a/c, windows stuck up in the summer time in Los Angeles sitting in traffic. ;)

Certainly sounds like the "hidden" fuse Jay. :D:D

IF it's just the fuse/fuseholder, it can be repaired for less than $20. I would certainly check there before condemning the climate control ECU.

I used to have the same problem on my 348 spider. In the end (after replacing almost everything) we found that the reason for shutting off was that the plastic divider in the bumper a/c intake was broken. When I drove the car the divider was pushed up by the airflow and blocked the fresh airflow to the radiator. The system overheated and shut itself off.
Duct tape solved the problem. :)
