I poured over the many A/C threads on this site with a wealth of info, but I still need some help. I'm trying to figure if my compressor clutch is working. There were suggestions to run 12 volts directly to the compressor to see of the clutch engages. Here's what I get: the clutch does engage, but sort of half-heartedly. With only moderate effort you can still turn the outer pully wheel separate from the inner hub. Is that normal, or is it supposed to be a solid bond?
More disturbing: when I do the above, the wires I'm using heat up rapidly and start to smoke if not not disconected in 10 or 15 seconds. One of the threads on A/C mentioned the resistance between the power wire going into the clutch and the body should be 3 ohms. If I put the ohm meter on it's most sensative scale it does read 3 ohms, so I presuming it's not a short, but it sure seems to act like one. If I measure the resistance between the power wire and the ground wire screwed to the case, it is infinate, so I presume my diode on he ground wire is working properly. Any one one have any ideas?
Lastly, if I have a bad clutch, how do you get it off? I played around with a pully puller hooked into the back lip of the pully wheel, but it seemed reluctant to move and I didn't want to distroy anything. When looking at the hub of the clutch I see 3 threaded holes around the center shaft. I wondering if there is some special Ferrari clutch pulling tool that untillizes those holes??? Any ifdeas would be greatly appreciated
