Jas forgot to mention that the 348's were faster than the 355's on the slaloms.

They were also better in the rain on the larger track, although beaten by the 355's in the dry. Except for Andyhls's 348, which vanquished all the other cars.

One of these days, I'd like to see a picture from a Ferrari meet in the UK where the ground was dry. :( You folks over there are some tough ol' birds to deal with that climate!

Is that normal for the 348 to post faster slalom times then the 355? If so, why?

The 348 engine has more low-end torque. There are two places where the 348 can beat a 355:
    1. when starting at 20mph in a race to about 60mph (e.g. rolling away from a red light) and
    2. in a tight slalom.

Same thing for Corvette's. The slalom champion for Corvette's is a 1987 model...dog slow compared to all modern Vette's, but extra-ordinarily torquee down in the range required for a tight slalom course.

Keep in mind that you aren't hitting high RPM's in a tight slalom. The 355 has outstanding horsepower, but you've got to hit the high rpms to get to it.

You want low-end torque to win a slalom.

Only just!! - After I did the fastest (Ferrari) time of 1:05 the Exige did a couple more runs doing roughly the same times - the last run I saw it do was a 1:03 (mind you the track was starting to dry out by then :D) I was actually quite surprised at the nimbleness of the 348 as I too thought that the Lotus was have eaten us all for breakfast!

I think most of us were initially disappointed when it started raining but at the end of the day I was really glad it did.

I learnt a valuable lesson that I wouldn't have if the track had been dry i.e. be very very careful in the wet because once that back end goes there's very little chance of getting it back into a straight line again.

I'll certainly be a lot smoother in the wet now that I've experienced what can go wrong if you're not careful

Yes, but it was one of the new (slow/heavy) Exiges. One of the old ones with less weight would have been significantly quicker. This one was 200kg (400 Lb) heavier than the old ones. Looked stunning though.

And to be fair the owner had just finsihed the run in and initial service that week.

I was trying to avoid getting into all that :) But it is true to say that the 348's were better behaved on track i.e. more controllable on the limit. 355's were spinning much more.

I suspect it was the driver aids and power steering that were reducing feedback to the driver and making them awkward on the limit.

(Having driven the 355, I was disappointed by the lack of feedback, and that's the primary reason I went for the last of the non-power assisted, non electronic suspension, Ferraris. The F430 however seemed to overcome these limitations and felt great to drive.)

Here's a short video shot with my digital stills camera.

    Go to http://www.blade.quickanet.net/

Then click on the FERRARI folder.

    Then RIGHT-CLICK, SAVE-AS.

The site has limited capacity so after a lot of downloads it will lock for 24 hours. If that happens, try again the next day :)
