I had a check engine 1-4 light coming on and intermittent very slight stuttering and battery drain. Had the Ferrari tech. connect the SD1 and am informed that the alternator is not putting out the required voltage specially with the lights etc on. Im informed that the alternator on the 348 has been upgraded 3times. Can anyone tell me where i could get one without losing my limbs!! He informed me that the wiring loom connection with the alternator is also recommended.
    Please help...

Since your profile is blank a lot of guess work is involved but I assume you have an early 348. They came with a very poorly built Delco alternator and the factory had an upgrade kit to retrofit a Nippondenso that included a different set of mounts and a wiring harness to complete the installation.

Last I was aware they were still available from Frerrari but they are expensive.

It was very generously offered free for many years after the cars went out of warranty to anyone that had a problematic charging system by FNA.

Mine is a 93 348 and guess your right its got the Delco one, though I am not sure. And yes the tech.mentioned that a wiring harness will be required with the upgraded one.
How can I get this at the cheapest possible cost.

The alternator is virtually the same as used on hundreds of thousands of GM cars. Mine had lots of problems when I first bought the car 6 years ago and I removed it and had it rebuilt by a local alternator/starter shop for well under $100 twice in six months. I finally stopped the oil leak from the cam cover directly above the alternator which was keeping the exterior and interior of the alternator well coated, and I have not had a single problem since (>15,000 miles). Buying into an upgraded Nippondenso will cost many, many times the repairs on a Delco. I even bought a spare at Advance Auto when I was having the problem years ago, but have not needed it. I also added a voltmeter so that I could monitor the alternator's performance - far better than an idiot light that just tells you when it's too late.

I know a couple people with older 348's that just had the Delco unit rebuilt....I think one even had it "upgraded" to a slightly higher output. So it can be done. While the ND unit may be the best option, consider that Delco unit lasted this long (10+ years). A good rebuild ought to keep you going for a while longer.

So are you suggesting that I rebuild or change. If I rebuild what are the parts that I need to buy and supply the shop. Jack can you give me a price on the alternator and which one is it.
I will check and get back as to whether I have the delco version or the ND version at present.
Thanks a million for the help.

Can anyone lety me know the output the alternator should generate. Both under normal conditions and under load( headlights, fans etc). It will be easier to check if the repair is right or needs further tweeking.
    Thanks

I'll assume you have a front-battery car, right?

Although I don't think the retrofit kits are even available any more, the last part number I can find (after about 5 supersessions) is 70000808. I think you'd be well north of $1500 for the conversion. The retrofit kits included:

    Alternator
    Mounting blocks
    Studs, screws, washers, belt
    Wiring harness

Get a qualified shop to pull the alternator and test/rebuild it before doing anything financially imprudent like buying a new one.

If your running '93 I would be amazed if your do not have a Nippon unit.

    I have a '91 with a nippondenso unit

    These are easily rebuilt.

Oil drips from the cam covers and damages the internal brushes.

Don't know your location but if UK I can provide an link to a shop that rebuilds them circa £100.

Whatever you do, make sure they remove/replace the voltage regulator with a new one! I had a friend have mega troubles with his ND alternator....tested okay multiple times...but finally someone ran it on the bench for a long time, and found the voltage regulator failed when it got hot.

Rebuilt my 348TS AC Delco alternator end of last summer season (let me down on the way to the final UK Maranello meet at Castle Coombe!).

I bought the diode pack and regulator mail order (standard 105A rather than upgrade), fitted them at home and so far jobs been a good un'. One point, if you DIY you will need a very powerful soldering iron or three! Don't forget to check your bearings, you may need to size up and order those also. My job cost me about 70 UK pounds!

BTW a Lucas service Centre quoted me 200 quid all in, which I guess is also reasonable if you didn't want to do the job yourself. From my experience I'm not sure the ND conversion route is necessarilly the best way to go, its certainly very costly in comparison and I had read whilst researching into my situation that the Nippon one isn't so simple to get parts for if rebuilding, others on here could confirm if thats really the case?
If anyone needs a UK contact for these parts PM me and I'll dig out my details.

Aren’t the Nippon Denso, and possibly the AC Delco, alternators covered by a sheetmetal shroud to prevent oil leaks from depositing in and on the unit? I ask because someone along the line removed mine and never replaced it. Expensive little item from Ferrari, around $450 if I recall correctly. May fab 1 for my spider 1 of these days if I cannot locate a reasonably priced used shroud.

I paid $99.75 to have my 348's Delco alternator completely rebuilt in May 2001. I haven't had the slightest problem with it since then. The job was done in one afternoon by a local shop who didn't care that it came out of a Ferrari. Parts were on the shelf.

    Steve,

Cam shaft seals are circa £500 in the UK. - at least that what it cost me during an engine out service - and they started again 3 months later. !!

How was Genova - I was based there for 6 months several years ago ?
