Hi guys, I saw a small plate in the engine bay with the label " assembly number" and the number. Is it specifically for the 348? ie: if I have the assembly number 1250, it means that my 348 is the 1250th done?
I think so. Supposedly the 348 was the first model to include these plates, but my car did not get one (approximately the 35th 348 built). Apparently the plates started after the first few rolled off the assembly line. BT
That's a good question. This is described in the Handbook as "Ferrari Plate". I don't know for certain, but I think the number is intended to indicate how many cars Ferrari had built in a particular year. My car's number is 05219, for a car built in December 1990. It's also possible that the sequence of numbers starts with 01001, not 00001. If your car is number 1250 (or is it 01250?), does it have a production date towards the front of the year? The date is on the top line of the tag in the front of the left front door jamb. It would be interesting to compare some of these numbers, just for fun.
A few years after Ferrari was forced to go to the standarzied VIN they decided they needed a new simpler system for internal use to keep track of the cars. There is no block of numbers just for 348, 512 etc. They are just assigned in order as the cars are built.
