I have a dead battery and I understand the proper way is to remove the wheel and arch to get at it.
Another thread suggested you could 'jerk it out'. Any thoughts on this as something appears to be securing my battery solid!
Maybe easier to just take the wheel off.
It is a 91 348 with the battery in the back.

When in doubt... jerk it out!! :D

But seriously, it probably will be easier to take the wheel off.

I have a front battery 348, and it is secured down by a few simple nuts.

There is a clamp holding the bottom of the battery down onto the tray. The clamp is held by a single nut, which can be reached from above with a 13mm or 14mm socket on an extension. It's hard to see from above, but not really hard to loosen. It's much easier to see if you remove the wheel and liner, but the battery CAN be removed from above. You can't "jerk it out" until the holddown clamp has been loosened or removed.

Don't forget the "re-initialization" process once the new battery has been installed.

    Thanks all,
Battery is out via wheel arch.
Anyone point me in the right direction for what to do when its reconnected.
Is there some cut off switch or reinistialisation process?

The process is to start the motor without touching the accelerator and let the enging run until the cooling fans start running (gets hot). Then you can turn it off and drive it like you stole it! The interstate MT-34R has the recess in the lower case to use the factory mounts but I had to weld a piece of 3/8 tubing cut lengthwise to the rear prongs. Good luck!

I've done both, and I can tell you jerking it out is a heck of a lot more fulfilling, save the bloody knuckles you will incur in the process. As inconvenient as the 348 battery is situated, there is something very satisfying about giving it the ol' heave ho and busting your "nuts" to get it out via the jerk out method. The first thought that came to my mind aft was "Take that you italian jokesters, I got that SOB out!!"
