It depends on when the LAST 30K service was. If this is the first, replace it. If it is the second or third, I wouldn't. If you take the attitude "Aw heck...I might as well change this while I'm in there..." It's like painting an old fence - there's nowhere to quit! Honestly, how many 348's out there have had water pumps go kaput in 5 to 10K miles of driving?

I agree in general with this but with the caveat that on the 348 the pump acts as an idler wheel for the belt and a failure of the pump will cost you a belt and maybe more. Best case if you have a pump go south you have to do the belt job all over again.

It seems to be all the rage to do 355 pumps while the motor is out "just because". IMO that is stupid. #1 355 pumps have not been a big problem, #2 they are not all that hard to replace with the motor in the car.

The engine out major means just that, a MAJOR job. You will be changing just about everything. As for the water pump it really depends on how often you drive the car, and if it is the original pump. As Brian said it acts like and ilder. The thing you want to make sure of is the condition of the bearing in the pump. If the bearing has play, CHANGE it. When I did my major I didn't change the pump because the condition of the bearing was just fine. However I do drive my car quite a bit. The reason most change the pump during the major is because if it goes out you have to pull the engine to replace it. There isn't any way around doing it that way. Anyway here are the things that you will want to have done.

All the water hoses, there will be 11 of them, that includes the hose under the intake plenum.

    The alternator, and a/c belt.

All the spark plugs, and check the condition of the spark plug wires.

Front and rear cam seals, there are 5.

    Cam o-rings, 4 of those.

Cam cover gaskets, including the the 4 at the rear of the covers.

Air filter, oil fiter, and both fuel filters.

Check the valve clearances, and adjust as needed back to within specs.

Drain and replace engine oil, transmission oil, and coolant.

Drain break fluid, replace and bleed breaks and clutch.

Replace the tentioner and idler bearings for the timing belt.

Check the condition of the idler bearing for the alternator, replace if needed.

Check freon charge in a/c system.

Of course a new cam belt

Check the condition off all vacume hoses, replace as needed.

Check condition of oil vapor hoses, secondary air injection, and idle control hoses. Replace as needed.

And yes check the water pump, and replace if needed. Also check the condition of the thermostat while you are at it. Replace it if needed, but don't stress over it. If the thermostat goes out, that can be changed pretty easy with the engine still in the car.

Well that's about all I can think of off the top of my head.
