Just a quick observation. You rarely see 348's with the original black sills these days but often when you see pictures they stand out in a way that they don't in real life. Where as a camera seems to pick them up, in reality they get somewhat lost in the shadows under the car (as long as they are opaque which they are supposed to be). When people see my car in real life they often comment on how good the sillls actually look when black, and that includes several 348 owners, but when people see photos of cars thay invariably say they prefer the colour coded sills.

I was out with another 348 owner, his car has colour coded sills and red 'fake front radiator' where mine has both black. I took a photo of both cars next to each other and for once the black sills came out looking far more like they do in real life so thought I'd post it up for a comparison. Neither car is lowered but to my eye the black sills make the car look a bit sleeker and maybe even lower, yet it's clearly an optical illusion as you can see the roof lines are at the same height. Thoughts anyone?

Don't really like the red radiator, especially without the horse. It also makes the indicators look huge!
But I suspect the angle of the photo has a lot to do with why his car looks so much larger than yours. Both cars look great, mind you.

It's not so much the angle Steve, it's just because your eye doesn't pick up the black as much as the red. So for the width for example you register the red painted area as the height and when you compare that to the width of the red painted area, the black silled car looks wider. On this photo the red silled car should look wider, it's more face on to the camera, does it though?

This particular chap (who is on Fchat) has said having seen mine in the flesh he's off to get his sills painted black. Each to their own but they do look better in real life than on almost every photo I've seen :)

p.s. His 'radiator' is also going black, horse going on.

Fair enough Pete. I actually like both. Not saying one is better than the other. The key to that photo really is that your car looks much lower and wider than the other one, which is what a Ferrari should be as far as I'm concerned.
In a strange way, that photo looks like a 360 parked next to a 355 in terms of size.
Surely just the black sills couldn't make that much difference?

Like I said, not the greatest artiste, but look at how wide the other car looks now. You don't get the full effect because I'm rubbish at this sort of thing and can't blend the sill in totally, but hopefully gives an idea if you compare to the first pic.

Thing is you know the picture has been edited (badly) but just look at the width of the left hand car in the first non-edited shot (not focusing on the sills, just the car in general) now scroll down and look at the width of the left hand can in the second shot. Just flick between the two. You know they're the same width - it's the same car on the same photo, but the impression you get is that the edited one is wider, just an optical illusion.

Nice try. But your car still looks lower and wider. The other car just looks bigger!

On a completely unrelated topic, why are your number plates so big?
My car - which came from the UK - had much smaller plates.

Ok, maybe the angle helps but do what I said just comparing the left car in the first shot to the left car in the second shot. First shot the car looks kind of taller and narrower to me.

Plates wise, new rules mean that you're not alllowed to use 'mini plates' any more and you can pick up a fine if you do - you would have thought they'd have better things to do with their time, wouldn't you?

    Great looking motor btw :)

Fair enough Pete. I don't disagree with you. Apart from the painted grille, I think both 348s look great.

Don't get my started on how the fuzz spend their time - last week I got pinged for doing 69kmh in a 60 zone, at 1.49am.
On my way home from work no less, and I kid you not, the copper (who was a nice bloke) admitted they had not seen another car on that road for more than 10 minutes!

Funny you should say, just finished it off for the guy who's car it is. He already said he's doing the grill etc but thought I might as well send it to him.

Bad luck with being ping'd. Always grates when you get the speach "I don't agree that it should be a **mph limit but......" One of my favourite driving roads near me has just been restricted to a 50mph for it's whole length - 10 odd miles of country road that is almost always empty.

I really like the eighties styling of the 348, especially with the black sills.
It does make the car much more difficult to photograph.
A "black sill" 348 looks much nicer in the flesh then on a picture.

I also like the rear cavallino in black, it somehow makes the rear more uniform.
I did withdraw the black wheels though, I found them a bit "too much".

When I bought mine it had been colour coded, as was the craze back then. I had them returned back to black, much better look IMHO.

I also think that colour matched grille area looks awful!

As its my car, I'll explain:
I've had it just over 3 weeks. The previous owner, about 5years - he loved how it drove, and he looked after the mechanicals, but once driving was over it was parked away in a barn and hence the aesthetic given no affection.

My guess is sometime prior to 5 years it had a minor altercation at the front and a new bumper applied. Hence, the "radiator" wasnt changed to red, it was was never black. (the towing eye hole isnt drilled either) Aftermarket bumper?

Now its in my care, the "radiator" will again be black and there will be a badge.

The black sills are a weird one. I've seen Nosevi's car twice now, once in sunlight and once under fluorescent lighting - and on both occasions I've really liked the black sills. And now I know they are an original feature I'm keen to return it to that.
(There is also a large scratch on the rear bumper, the only "needs paint" scratch on the car, so I need to paint at least some of the sills anyway)
But the black sills just dont photograph well.

It's what I love about these cars. I don't like the black sills but then the GTC came with red sills....so what do I know?

Reminds me of my preference years ago for a red 512 BB vs the red with black bottom half of the original 365 GT4 BB. Now I much prefer the original Boxer colour combo to the successor....now that is weird!! ;)

Steve, not seen you for a while, hope life is treating you well?

Obviously both your motors were always supposed to be 'colour coded' and it does make them look more modern, but the black sills were such a classically Italian thing (perhaps overdone a tad on the original Boxers?) that it just dates the car nicely while making it look sleeker, looks great along side an original Tessa, the single air intake in the lower right sill doesn't stand out which can make the design look less balanced and .......... No? Ok, we'll have to agree the differ (just for a change :) )
