Today I was going to go to work with the 348. I've had a slightly erratic idle for the past month or so (getting worse), but this morning, I turn it on and immediately it dips to 500rpm, surges and then stalls. Doh -- have to go to work with the bimmer. I spend sometime researching idle issues and find this gem of a post from whyte:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137343470&postcount=10

Sounded exactly like my symptoms, low RPM, burbling exhaust on deceleration. All pointed to the TPS (Throttle position sensor).

So I follow the post above, clean them with the radioshack potentiometer cleaner, disconnect the battery, let it idle 10 minutes and BAAMM! Rock solid idle at 1000rpm, not a hint of movement. Car seems to pull a lot more. Like whyte said, the high rpm exhaust note is insane, not sure why that is different, but it is.

All is well again in my world :)

    Thanks brotherhood!!!

    Awesome! Glad it helped.

Those ECUs do a pretty good job of keeping your engine running, even when things are subpar. My car ran "ok" while having minor issues with all of these:

    TPS cleaning
    Contacts
    Idle Air Bypass
    Throttle Bodies
    Cam Sensor Contacts

After some basic maintenance on these items, and a few others, the car's character has taken on a much more refined feel. I'd encourage any owner to take the time to go through these, and any other "tune up" type issues, on a regular basis.

As as footnote, I was very happy with my major service but none of these things I mentioned above were identified or corrected during my $9,000 major. I suspect some of these issues have never been addressed since the car was new. I mention this not to criticize the dealer's work, but rather, to remind owners that a Major/Minor has a defined scope of work involved (generally) and does not necessarily include correcting some of these common quirks that fall somewhere between routine tune-up and minor repair.

This is exactly what I've come to discover as well. I guess you just assume given the price tag for these things that they would go over every last bit of the car with a fine tooth comb, but that is unrealistic.

there are two, they are on top of the throttle bodies. You will see the wires connecting to them. Simply detach the wires, unscrew the two screws each (be careful, there is a washer, don't drop it). pull them out, spray, twist pot around to clean and put them back. All of 20 minutes.
