Hi guys my frst time posting but been lurching the forum for awhile now. my questions is i have a 90 348ts and after checking the cam belt last night i would say i need to replace the belt soon . can it be done without removing the engine as i dont have any place to put the car on hoist. i read a post that the gasoline tank need to be remove in order to access the cam belt covers etc. if it can't be done how much would they normally charge for cam belt service or 30k major?

    Thanks
    Herb

Engine must come out. $4K for a thorough service from a reliable independent.

Cam belt can be done through gas tanks although it doesnt seem to be highly recommended...From what I hear, must people just get it all done because if your going to do all that work to pull the tanks, you might as well just pull the motor and do everything, tensioner bearings and so on...if the tensioner bearings lock up...your brand new belt is toast...and you cannot do the bearings with the motor in...I need to get mine done too...I think what I am going to do is buy the kit from sodacoms, buy a waterpump too...and have a independent mechanic do it...about $1500-$2000 in parts and another $2k in labor...my guesstimate...

    Herb,

I did this on my 348 in my garage without a lift, it's easy!
I posted the procedure with pictures a while back, other members
have done it too! basically all you need to do is to jack up the car
~15 inches, drop the subframe onto a rolling dolly or such and rotate
the whole subframe underneath the car in order to gain access to
    the front...

how did you drop the subframe onto the dolly? I would assume that it is extremely heavy...

How many hours did it take you to remove the subframe and what other part did you have to replace i.e cambelt, tensioner.etc cost of the parts and any special tools needed?

    Thanks

I remember this post, but after "THE CRASH" the pics are gone. Any chance of a re-posting?

By the way, does the engine remain under the car during the work, or is 15" enough to get the engine clear of the shell?

Try Modern Auto Technology in Pasadena. They do lots of 30K services and me thinks you'll come in closer to $4K!

I have seen at Norwood's they don't even USE lifts! They simply unbolt the subframe and lift the chassis of the assembly, (after removing all the accessories of course). Doesn't appear hard at all.

How did you assess the correct belt tension after changing to a new one? I am about to do my 348 belt and this is my biggest concern, not how to pull the motor etc, that parts relatively easy.

I did the belt on my 928 porsche about 6 yrs ago and I was lucky enough to get my hands on the correct tensiometer for that job, I dont have a contact to get hold of a guage for the 348. Interested how you assessed this.

My own 348 is about to get its 4th belt in 13 yrs and only 4K miles of use and I can't help wondering that if I get the tension even a little wrong it could be far worse than running the currently fitted belt another couple of years!

It's possible, but so is flying without wings of a parachute. Remove it, it's the only way to go. 348 is easiest second to a TR.

    Dave,

I might be wrong here, but I think the actually tensioner bearing applies the correct tension i.e its not adjustable.

I did mine on my 944 S2 and that's a spring loaded tensioner as is the 968, not sure on the 928. No problems after 48K miles which reminds me its time to do it again.

    Cheers

    John

    Dave,

    just checked the WS manual

Tension is adjusted by 'stretching' the spring in the tensioner and using a STAEGER tensionometer

God knows how your supposed to do that.

    Best of Luck

    John,

Your response made me think twice, but as I suspected a specific p/n Steager is required to get the job done correctly (it was a 'staeger' I used on the 928).

Anyone in the UK got a loaner I could stick a deposit down on for a couple of days use? Or do Sykes Pickavant/snap-on etc do an alternative?
