I just today received a 348 Challenge exhaust from another member which I’m considering restoring and then using to induce tinnitus in at least one of my ears.

    Questions…

    1) I’ve only seen one other of these online and the tag appeared slightly differently and included “ANSA”. Is this one legit? Did they change the tag over time?

    2) The tips are quite worn. Were they originally chrome? It seems so, but I want to be sure.

    3) For the rest of it I was thinking I’d have it jet-hot coated in satin silver. Any opinions there?

    Thanks for your thoughts, fellas.

Try to polish tips with a very thin steel wool and water.

    Lucas,

Just polish the tips and leave the rest of the muffler alone. It's in nice condition with patina it has collected with light use.

By the way, the correct name for that part is "Special Challenge Silencer."

348 and F355 Challenge cars came with a Special Challenge Silencer for noise restricted tracks and a Challenge Silencer for unrestricted tracks.

Not all Challenge silencers had ANSA stamped on the ID plate or on the silencer body. The Ferrari part number plate with the correct part number is what's important.

Your Part #147773 silencer is an OEM 348 Challenge Silencer.

Thanks gentlemen. I presume it’s made from stainless steel?

One other question: did the unsilenced versions have a separate part number?

What you pictured is the is the "unsilenced" version which is correctly termed by Ferrari in the 348 Challenge Regulations Manual as the "Special Challenge Silencer" with Part Number 147773. This is the silencer used on tracks without noise restrictions.

The "Challenge Silencer" is the quiet version for noise restricted tracks like Lime Rock Park. The part number for the 348 Challenge Silencer is 156072

I don't have a copy of the 348 Challenge Regulations Manual but this page from the F355 Challenge Regulations Manual provides similar information however with different part numbers...

Challenge Silencers for both the 348 and F355 Challenge cars look similar to the stock mufflers.

Both types of Challenge silencers are stainless steel.

I wouldn't bother jet-coating your silencer. It looks as it's supposed to look after it's been in light use.

Those usually have a turbo blocking a lot of the noise. These cars can be ear protection loud with a straight exhaust, at least with the windows open.

Ultimately, I decided to sell the unit as pretty as it was because I was scared I’d be too loud, especially in my spider.

Yes, at the track we're required to have our windows open for safety reasons. Ear protection is a must with the Challenge silencer. My helmet has speakers fitted (I don't care for earbuds) with overlying padding which provides the necessary ear protection for me...

You've chosen wisely. A Challenge silencer is not for a street car.

I can't hit a repeater at our tracks here in the East, Tim. I have to place my order for pizza through my pit crew...

Most of my calls are to let them know I'm pitting in to check tire pressures. Every once in a while it's for something more important like the time my alternator light came on. So it was back to the garage where they found a broken wire in the connector harness to the alternator...

They spliced the wire and I was back on the track 30 minutes later. :)
