Hello all just bought a 1992 348 TS. Going through the car and sorting things out and I absolutely love it. However, when starting out in first gear on level ground there is no problem but if it is ever so slightly inclined it's very clunky. The car shakes a fair amount when starting off. It was actually that way when I bought it and I got it at a decent price knowing the problem existed. All other shifts are perfectly fine with no issues it's just from a dead stop in first gear where it's jumpy. It almost feels as if the flywheel or pressure plate is warped..... very unusual. The car does have the Dual clutch set up. Could this be the dreaded clutch that needs to be re-packed with grease...or worse? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated before I tear into it.

If the flywheel needs a repack then you should hear that rattle sound upon shutdown.

If it's bad enough, then the engine won't fire up right away either (engine start).

Do you notice any drivetrain rocking when shifting gears?

But yeah, check for leaking underneath... clutch chatter is a common symptom for contaminated disks and etc.

Awesome I'm going to check it out this weekend. It actually shifts perfectly through all other gears it's only when starting out in first gear from a standstill..... the shuttering is actually pretty bad it shakes the whole rear. I've learned to feather it where it doesn't do it but I'm sure it's not good for the clutch to be letting it out so slowly. As far as rattle on shutdown there is none however I am experiencing the hot start problem so I'll tear into it this weekend.

Sounds to me like you may have a loose or broken motor mount, or transmission mount.

Well, I did a visual inspection of the clutch and it looks awesome it's dry it's clean it looks like it has plenty of thickness although that's just me looking at it but there's no grease and no oil slung around in the housing I looked pretty thoroughly with a dental mirror. I checked the bolts on the motor mount and they were all snug and the transmission mount as well looks to be intact and in good repair. I read somewhere and I can't find it again that a cracked pressure plate could cause this symptom of a chattery start off in first gear has anyone heard of this before. I think either way I'm going to be removing the clutch for further inspection it's got to be clutch related

Well I realize this is kind of a lame post but I'm still hoping that someone out there has had a similar problem. I ordered a clutch alignment tool and triple seals just on principle and I'm going to disassemble everything and take it to a machine shop and have it checked my suspicion is something is Warped or out of whack or maybe it was assembled incorrectly i e possibly the shims? It's crazy but the previous owner had the whole clutch and flywheel redone a few years ago and spent over $6,600 which is nuts. So again either something is out of whack or maybe due to aggressive driving something is worn or broken will keep you posted

PS. I ruled out motor mounts and transmission mounts and also I didn't realize it but it is jumpy in Reverse when starting off as well and even worse when on a slight incline all other gears are fine once moving.

It's clutch chatter which can happen intermittently for a variety of reasons. I occasionally get it on everything from a new clutch to a clutch with 100,000 miles on it. If you have no damaged or worn components that would obviously cause it then you can hunt it down forever with no good results.

Well I appreciate all the helpful suggestions and I thought I would report that the problem is fixed. So I pulled the clutch apart this past weekend and what I found was what I would describe as copper colored glazing marks on the flywheel intermediate and pressure plate surface in random spots that you could actually feel with your finger tip. I presume these built up over time from the copper flecks which are mixed in the clutch plate lining? Anyway I took 400 grit sandpaper and very carefully and meticulously removed the spots. The clutch plates looked good so I let them ride I replaced the triple seals just on principle they were very slightly leaky put it all back together in the car drives perfectly. I did order a new plates and will change them out early next year but I wanted to put everything back together as is to rule out some other problem keeping things constant.

Sorry for the misspells I did want to add that I purchased the Hill Engineering alignment tool from Ricambi which I feel is an absolute must I can't conceive of how you could do this job without it. I actually had to disassemble mine and realign because I could not get it to slide on to the shaft. Others claim they have done it without it but I don't see how that's possible. If it's the best 66 bucks I've ever spent in my whole life.
