Quickie question for the experts here I guess.

Should the cooling fans run on after switching off the engine and pulling the key (if there is enough heat in the system)?

A previous owner has fitted an immobilizer and, when I switch off and pull the key out, everything stops dead.

When I put the key and immobilizer back into service, sometimes the fans start running. Should they be allowed to run on with ignition switched off or is the immobilizer cutting a circuit too many?

    Thanks

    Drew

I think there was a thread on this subject a short time ago.

On my 348, the cooling fans shut off when the engine is shut off.

Having the fans continue to run with the engine off (water pump not running) would seem to be of little benefit, since the water that is cooled in the radiators has no way to get back to the engine.

Impeccable logic, but why do so many cars have this feature?

You can force the issue with the motor off but key in position I or II by running the heater. 348 and 355 electric heater pumps push 8 gallons or more of coolant per minute, so you can avoid a great deal of engine heat soak after the motor turns off by using the electric heater pump and radiator fans (which will run with the key in Position II even with the engine off, if desired).
