Recently bought a full set of 348 shocks/ dampers. The dampers were listed as “348 Challenge Bilstein Dampers, fully adjustable with trick valving. Removed from real Challenge that competed etc.” The dampers are in excellent condition. They show very little use, the fronts look new, the rears show minor spring rub but also appear almost new. My questions are: 1. If they are fully adjustable I cannot tell how. They appear the same as my stock Bilsteins. Is there an adjustment method I am missing? 2. The dampers have Ferrari markings and part numbers but the rears are numbered different from my parts manual. Fronts are listed in the manual and marked 146290(also marked 2021442WOQO) Rears are marked 146291(also marked 2091443WQOO) but the Ferrari parts manual lists the rears as 155188. Are these correct rears for my 348 spider? I really do not care if these are “Challenge” dampers, just correct for my car. Any and all input appreciated.

Check Service Bulletin #60-27 and the workshop manual, Section F around pages25-30 IIRC.

This is what comes up from that part number (146291).
348 TB rear shocks, superceded from 141858.
Valid for nut 137826. Not for US Spider; for TB / TS I & D only. Valid till car ass. No 13559. For all other version valid till car ass. No 13920.

So from that description it would not be correct for a Spider!!

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,
    Phil.

I don't know if they were adjustable, but the 348 challenge IIRC used a different damper than stock. According to the '94 challenge manual those are correct parts #'s and the only ones allowed on the 348 challenge. Front 146290 and rear 146291.

I thought the original 348 shock was Koni. My parts catalogue has 141857 front and 141858 rear.

Bilsteins were stock on all 348's but valving was changed as needed. They were never adjustable but you can buy aftermarket adjustable ones. The only thing "challenge" is that some people revalved challenge car's shocks to try to gain an edge on the track. It is really no big deal. The hero of revalving is our own rxracr aka rob shermerhorn aka deltavee right here on FC. He is the man. I run his revalved shock, I like it and will use him again as needed.

So what are the aftermarket options for 348 shocks?

Everything works with the right conversion even the 5000.00 motons with remote reserviors

Thanks, but I have no idea what you are saying (though I'm fairly sure that you *aren't* saying that any shock sold from Discount Tire would work on a 348).

Thanks guys, appears these are not the correct shocks for my spider but are original challange dampers. I was not aware the 348 challange used different shocks and valving. The modified valve settings make sense considering the end use. Probably sell and buy the correct dampers. Thanks again for all the help.
