Hi gang, Here is the update on my door handle problem that i was experiencing. The driver's interior door handle did not open the door. Very uncool having to power down your window and reach outside to get out of your car! I carefully removed the door panel(s) and checked both ends of the cable and found them to be in one piece and still attached. When i grabbed the steel cable inside the sheathing i discovered that it was snapped. I ordered a replacement door cable ... and end clips... and taking my time replaced the cable. Took a bit of time but now it works like a charm! Total cost... $71 TIP... when you remove the door panel be sure to have on hand a few new door panel clips (part #14188181) as you are sure to find one or two that are not in very good shape. They hold the panel securely in place.
Hi, can you tell me where you get all those parts for the service, I'm ready to work on the same problem you have, thank you
Hi 348KK, The parts that you will need are the door cable #62830600 one clip #40063208 and one clip #63291200 along with the aforementioned door panel clips (i think that there are 6 or so in total... they are cheap so have them on hand). You will also need a large and a small philips screwdriver, a 10mm socket, a couple of medium zap straps, a good flashlight and patience. This should get you through the job. Good luck. Don
I think #62830600 is the not right number for door cable, 62830600 =GLOVE BOX STRUT .. do you have the correct # thanks source: ricambiamerica.com
Oopss! You caught me. The correct part # for the door cable is #64314100. Thanks for spotting that... sharp eyes.
I am wondering if anyone has an extra replacement inner door cable for my 1991 348. Mine snapped and I was reading this thread. People state it is in the $80 range. When I look at Ricambi, it is now over $200.00. Is that right? Man that door is a pain to take apart!
I now have a broken door cable and need to replace it. I have removed the interior panels and found that the cable is snapped but still attached at both ends. I got the ends loose from the clips and the clips are intact. Can anyone give me any advice how to install the new cable? There is very limited room to get in there to replace a cable. With the cable having ends on it I imagine I can't just insert a new inner cable in the old sleeve. Is it easier to get to the area by removing the side strakes? Help!!!
When I did my cable I managed through only removing the outer strakes from the door. There was a bit of finger scraping manouvering required, and I loosened the door latch to hook in the new cable, but this meant I didn't have to go through the inner door membrane or remove the three inner door panel parts and risk breakage of the clips. See here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242408
Yep... remove the strakes... btw.. mdsassaman told me the cable cost 170.... where'd you find it for 70? Also.. just a note here... the strakes are easy to take off.. but a PITA to put back on... I have one of the lower middle bolts, while not stripped.. it went in harder than the other allen bolts.. .be careful lining these puppies up when you put it back together. I figure I'm going to have to sort that one bolt next time I pull the strakes.
I found that my door cable on the drivers side was broken. When I fished it out it had rust and was frayed. It looked like somewho water had gotten into the cable sheath and laid at the low spot and rusted the cable until it broke. I looked online and the best price I found for a replacement cable was $166.00 plus shipping. All together it was going to be about $180!!! I ordered it only to find out that it was not in stock. I called all around and couldn"t find one except special order from Italy. I looked over the situation and decided to see what I could do to make a cable. The cable has "L" shaped ends cripmed on each end of a braided cable. I checked at Autozone and they had nothing similar, I checked at a motorcycle shop and they had nothing similar. I went to Lowes and found the answer. Yep, Lowes! Lowes sells 1/16" galvanized braided cable for $0.26 per foot. You will need 5' plus a package of 1/16" Aluminum Ferrules which Lowes has for $1.24. The old cable ends were fine and there is enough room between the "L" shaped ends and the cable sheath to put the cables side by side and crimp the together with the ferrules and then snip off the old cable. In esscence joining the old ends to the new cable. Put the top end of the cable, end with the interior latch on first as close to the old end as possible. At the door latch end there is more room to join the cables together. There is an adjustment at the upper end so screw it in before joining the cables so you have adjustment. Join the upper end then slip the new cable through the sleeve and then put the old cable end in the latch mechanism and join it to the new cable. Crimp the Aluminum ferrules really well. I used a pair of panel flanging vise grips I have and put nice crimps in the ferrules. It worked for me although getting the inner door panel off is not easy and I found that I had to raise and lower the window to get it out of the door guides and back in again. In all it took me about 3 hours to do this job and so far it works fine. Pictures are attached for your reference. If it holds, and I think it will, it sure beat $180. Mike - NICE Work! So you didn't take off the strakes to get at the door cable? I wonder if it would have been more difficult to get to it that way? I need to look at the pics of mine again.. I don't recall seeing anything like your cable in there... mine was a big red thing. Is that what yours was originally before your fix? David
David, There are actually two big red tubes inside the door. They are for the window lifting strips. The window lifting mechanism has two strips that move through the red tubes, one in the front and one to the rear, as you lower or raise the window. You will see the grey door latch cable sheath if you look in there. Mike
