Just a couple of questions regarding the starting and driving a 348.

    1. When is the 348 warmed up and ready to be "driven"? Is it when the "Oil temperature" is in the middle?

    2. Does everybody depress the clutch pedal when you start the car? That's what it says in the handbook.

    3. On cold start, my car starts first time. On hot start, it's a bit more sluggish.

    4. After a long journey, how long should I let the car idle to cool down?

    5. Is the smell of oil common? I'm not losing any oil, but when I drive with the window down I can smell hot oil. The Ferrari experience??

I've only had mine a day, but I'd say:

1/ I've heard it's when the oil temp dial registers something on it.

2/ I do that with all cars.

3/ Starts instantly at all times.

    4/ ?

5/ No oil smells in mine. Get it checked :)

    1. no the 348s do not need warming up in he morning, just jump in and give it some revs kid, about 8,000rpm will do. This will warm it up a little.

    2. it does not realy matter becourse clutches are two a penny any way.

    3. May i sugest taking a chill bag with you and drop a few ice cubes into the take after a hard run.

    4. Dont!! After a ball breaking tear arsing sesion it is best to just turn the car of as quickly as possable, Why you ask, well thats so the 348 does not get confused and think its a .........hight performance engine like .......THE 355s Mo Fo!!!!!:D

    5. ofcourse a 348 is going to leak like a B*st*rd and smell of oil, have you seen the way there built.

I do hope this helps my friend, trust me i know;)

MB. JAS you say yours dont have an oil smell?? No dude get your checked:D

    1. I'd rather say 5 miles of mixed driving minimum. That also gets a little heat into the tyres. I'd also look for some significant movement in the gearbox oil temp.

    2. When I remember to, which is about half the time.

    3. Mine's the same but not so much sluggish when hot, just sometimes turns over for longer before firing. I suspect some fuel vapourisation but it's not a big deal.

    4. I'll let the car idle for up to five minutes engine running and then I'll switch it off and leave the ignition on so the fans can work. They'll usually cut out after a minute or two.

    5. Sometimes the odd whiff.

    Hi mate :)

1......Wait until the oil temp gauge moves..then rag it to hear a sound that is far better than those later 355's ;)

2......I always depress the clutch peddle unless i am in the Jag :D ....You should as it makes the engine turn over easier!

3......Should start easy both times...when you say sluggish do you mean like if the battery needs replacing? :p

4.....You should only have to let a "supercharged" ;) or turbocharged car idle for a minute or so after a ragging.

5.....The oil smell indicates a slight leak imo...possibly cam seals quite common i beleive.

It's a three stage process. First, turn the key to run, not start. Fasten your seat belt. Your 348 has now had time to pressurize your fuel rails. Next, start the car. Verify that you have oil pressure. Let it idle until your ABS light, BRAKE light, Check engine lights, and slow down lights turn off. At this point, your idle should be down below 1100 RPMs and stable. That's Stage 1.

Now begin driving, but keep your RPMs below 4,000. Soon you should notice that when you return to idle, that your idle is 1000 on the money, that you have oil pressure on the first mark at idle and at mid point by or before 4,000 RPMs. When your oil temperature reaches the first mark, Stage 2 has ended.

With good oil pressure, good water temperature, and showing good oil temperature, then so long as you have no caution lights on your dash, then you are now good for maximum RPMs and full spirited driving.

I put my 348 into Neutral and depress the clutch to Start. YMMV.

Could be that you are just a tad bit lean on your fuel mixture (easy adjustment with a screwdriver), or it could be that you have a fuel pump that is slowly dying, or it could be a fuel presure regulator or actuator, or it could be a bad fuel injector.

Idle to cool down only if your oil temperature has gone over the 3/4 mark...which it shouldn't do unless you are racing.

Spilled oil will burn off over time. If you aren't losing oil, and if you are positive that it is oil burning that you smell (not plastic, not brake/clutch fluid), then no big deal. It's pretty common to spill a little oil down on the engine/tranny. So long as it isn't on your cats, then there is little harm in it.

You might check under your front bonnet to insure that stored oil (or old oil rags) aren't simply causing that smell to enter via your air vents. Sometimes the things that we store can emit odors, after all.

    Thanks. Everything checks out.

The oil smell is'nt a problem, it's the same smell I get from my V* jag. No loss of oil or any leaks. Just being paranoid I guess.

    1. Typically, once the car's had a few minutes to warm up (like most cars), I jump in and drive, but not taking the car over 4,000 rpms for about 5mins

    2. Sometimes, sometimes not, depends if my brains in gear

    3. Had mine over a year - absolutely identical! who cares?

    4. My car's so bloody loud (decat Tubi) can't stand any more noise, thus after a few moments, maybe 30seconds - time to switch off

    5. No oil smells, although i have had complaints about the smell of pure methane/kerosene or whatever those decat pipes pump out! - glorious:)

He owns a 355 and likes to rag on everything else, but especially the 348's. He appears to be a Lurker in this section and reads in hopes of finding anything bad to jump up and down on only to claim the 355 is somehow totally different! Don't forget, the 355 was built by the same crew that did the 348, so with time you may find the 355 has the same (or similar) gremlins in all Ferrari's that are 15 years old. I guess if he ever 'upgrades' to a 360 or 430, then the 355 will be junk to him. He is a little bit like a comedian that needs a new routine.

    My short experience:

    1. When the oil temperature gauge start to rise

    2. Always

    3. No difference between cold and warm start, starts immediately

    4. I'll have to drive to garage slowly anyway so it will takes temperatures down. But I also think this is problem only for the cars with turbos.

    5. Just the smell of those freely flowing exhaust gasses... :)

Bill, chaa's a good guy and well known and respeceted in the UK section. He respects all ferrari's including 348's.

We just like to wind each other up. At every opportunity, I make fun of his 355. You should see what we get up to in the UK section.

It's just good old fashioned British humour.

    By the way....355's suck!!!

I guess it is like Monty Python movies. the first fifteen times you see it it is just okay. But the 112th time I saw the Meaning of Life it was the funniest thing I ever saw.

Did you ever have the brit comedy "The Goodies" over there?

    Now that was funny.

I have owned a TR, 328 and the current 355, i also drive a 360spider, Lambougini, F430 coupe and indeed F430 spider, as well as a DB9 and Bently GT. I also went out with Jaz for his test ride in the 348 that i found or him. Do you see a picture forming here? I love all ferraris and all supercars and am only having a laugh with Jaz and Angelis its no big deal. I love all ferraris and i realy love the 348s why should i not? And you know what one of my all time ferraris are...the little 1972 246 Dino, and as many from the UK section will tell you i have many times thought about selling my 355 to buy the little non-high performance car. So there is no snobbery here mate:)
And the so called routine has only been used over the last two or three weeks where i know my friends post and will give a reaction
. I think maybe you should visit the UK forum and see that we are compleatly different to what you may think, you should have a look dude;)

    Chaa......are you by a chance a chaffeur?...LOL ;) :D

To the person who thought Chaa was being arrogant...no way....even when i first came on here i knew he was a 348 freak....and that it was just the lack of power sterring and heavy clutch that meant he could never own one :(

Those that haven't met Chaa might get the wrong idea from the posts. He's just pulling our (348-ers) legs, and it's all genuinely good natured.

Chaa did source my 348 Spider for me, and met me in Derby to join me on my test drive. We then had a ride in his wimpy pink 355 ;)

Despite driving a limp wristed pink 355, he's actually a decent bloke.

What you are reading here is spill over from the UK section. Don't take it seriously guys :)
