Hi I've just got my dream car...an 1989 348 Rdh 36k. But when I went to view / test drive it had low power?? guy said it's never seen a drop of rain in 6yrs but on view day none stop rain😬Could rain have caused my problems? He said never done it before? umm? Starts, ticks over perfectly doesn't splutter just flat.had a Ferrari friend who I could call while there, said didn't think serious but need to get extra money off to cover which I did. So need help please🙂 I'll explain what I've found so far...
2x ecu bulbs missing from middle of dash lights, will fit in couple of days. The 1/4 5/8 slow down lights don't light when ignition turned on or when running (their fitted but sorry not checked if blown? Will tomorrow.is that normal?
I've taken covers off motronic ecu's behind both seats no's 0 261 200 190. There are no test buttons and no leads visible. I've read there used to be leads and buttons available and people have made there own. But where would they connect? I've searched all over the car and cannot find any obd plugs to test ? I'm confused. I would really appreciate any help, advice on above please. Thank you Jamie, Shropshire, England

Unfortunately, the test button won't do any good until your fix the bulb problem first. And there's no "OBD" on the 348 either.

Gaëtan's instructions in post 2 gives lots of great info, just copy and paste the text into Google if you can't read French.

BTW, my car didn't have the test buttons either, but it does have the connection to the ECUs.

    Look for this:

Welcome, Jamie, and congratulations on acquiring your dream car!

If your car is truly an '89 it is most likely has the Motronics 2.5 engine management system. The easy way to determine that is whether or not there is a throttle position sensor on top of the right hand throttle body. If not be sure to follow the diagnostic procedure for 2.5 Motronics and make certain that any parts you order are compatible with that version of Motronics.

Assuming your car came with catalysts, the "Slow Down" lights (AKA SDLs) should come on when you turn the key, but not while you're driving (or at least that's the case with 2.7 cars). It's possible that the translator boxes for the SDL warning circuit have been disconnected. That's easy to check since the boxes are located on the rear shock towers. Each has two connectors, one for the thermocouple in the exhaust and one for the harness that leads to the ECUs and lights. If your car is fitted with catalysts the SDL warning system serves a very important purpose and should be repaired ASAP to reduce the risk of fires.

From your description it sounds entirely possible that one bank's ignition system has shut down. Due to the nature of Ferrari engines, they still run smoothly on four cylinders… they just lack a ton of power. The easy way to check for that is to use a non-contact thermometer to check the temperature of the exhaust pipes coming out of each manifold while the car is running. If one side is barely warm that bank is probably dead, and because the igniters and coils are also mounted to the rear shock towers where they can get wet, that'd be where I'd start looking.

Since the F119 is set up as two four cylinders sharing a block and crank, a non-contact thermometer is a very useful diagnostic tool. I'd start by using one to see if you can find a dead bank or some dead cylinders, and then proceed from there.

    HTH and good luck.

It is a 2.5 since the ECU-s are 0 261 200 190 (M25). I addition to what Mike suggested, I would also check the connectors to the MAF-s. Being on top, they are the first to be affected by rain, especially if the protective rubber boots are cracked. Often, just disconnecting and reconnecting them fixes (temporarily) any poor contact of the pins.

Since this is a true '89 there are no "Check Engine Lights". You can refer to the owners manual where they show the dash lights and it indicates these slots are not used. No need to track this part down on your diagnosis.

I have a 2.7 F355 but I have lost spark on a full bank for two reasons . One when my cat ECU would get wet and recently because of a bad ground. Do 348 have cat ecu? If they do, you might simply disconnect them and see if it runs on all 8.

Great points regarding the 2.5! Which questions my previous posts regarding the test buttons. In other words, I'm not sure if it applies.

    So many inconsistencies!

For the 1989 348, the Owners Manual (i.e. Technical Manual) shows that the check engine lights are "not used". However, not the same for the 1989 Mondial t, even though they both use the Motronic 2.5 system. In the meantime, there's no description of the check engine lights in the Mondial Owner's Manual (except in the light bulb spec chart - 2w).

So, pity the poor newbie Mondial t owner who's reading the manual. ;)

Please have a look at photos and your thoughts wound be really appreciated
Ps when I know which model I have where is best place to get a manual from?
    Thank you Jamie

What I want to know is whether the wiring is in place for the check engine lights? If so, simply installing a couple of lamps and wiring in the switches would enable the CELs... assuming the 2.5 Motronics supports them.

BTW, the covers are missing from your ignition modules, as I suspected they might be. This increases the chances of an ignition fault in wet weather.

Engine appears to be '89 given the single TPS. One item that is interesting to me is the Body Sequence Plate is present. The really early one didn't have one of these. Would be interested to know when they started to apply them. What is the build month of this car?

The wiring will be there, Mike. When I was checking my F355 dashboard circuits with a 9V battery, I found I had wiring for all sorts of things not fitted to my car (front fogs, Tire Press, rear window demist...). The wiring diagrams show this for the 348, too.

    Cheers

I kinda suspect so as well, based on the presence of the warning indicators. But nothing is a slam dunk on these cars. ;)

Looking at the wiring diagrams for the early cars with the Motronic 2.5, there's no connector for an ECU test button. Nothing after 212 in the components list either.

But for the 2.7, see connector 215b in this comparison image. Plus notice the extra components as well.

Hi thanks once again[emoji4] I've checked dash, there are wires to check light bulbs which are fitted and not blown (what would these light up for normally?) as mentioned before on here a local Bosch specialist said the 2.5 has no diagnostics. So what's best way forward? How does the ecu work ?? If water caused a fault / ecu shutdown the and it dried out is there a way to do a reset? Or if a part was causing problem and it was replaced would it automatically fix problem?? Just trying to understand it:)
Also if an ecu has shut down could I pull the plug caps off one by one until I had 4 off and still ticked over as now. Is that a logical test?
    Thanks Jamie

One of the first steps when a bad ECU is suspected is to swap them from left to right (or vise versa ;) ). The ECUs are the same, not left or right versions. If the problem goes to the other bank, then there you are.

My car runs the same ecu and to test them I had to use a breakout box so,you can check the oltage and resistance of all the sensors

Being old school the sensors are quite simple, at what rev range does it go flat

Hi it's slow to rev up and slow on the road. If someone had said its only got 100 hp you would think it was fine . Almost like as someone said maybe 1 bank gone down ?
    Thanks

Already covered. First check to ensure that both banks are firing by using a non-contact pyrometer and concern yourself with the ignition system before worrying about the Motronics.

You've already torn waaay deeper into this car than there was any need to at this point and yet you refuse to do the most basic diagnostics. Why ask for help if you're going to ignore it?

And another basic thing: do you have good fuel delivery/pressure on both sides? Fuel pumps can easily deteriorate (and even seize) if the car was sitting for a long time, especially if with low fuel level in the tank.

I'm not ignoring anything! I don't have a non contact pyrometer but have ordered one. As I know nothing about how the system works just trying to understand and learn as much information for now and the future.
