I just got done speaking to a certain Ferrari independant repair shop and he said the 348 motor is Bullet Proof !!! I tried to talk him out of that state of mind by bringing up the single point failure timing belt.............and he insisted..... "unless someone runs it without oil or completely and totally disregards any maintenence at all...... the engine is indeed Bullet Proof"!!!

    So now what ???

I've heard in person many technicians and experienced Ferrari people use the adjective "bullet-proof" used to describe the 348 engine.

when the F355 first came out, everybody thought it was the second coming and the 348 was a POS (I was one of those)

until, ALL the problems on the F355 became apparent

then, opinions slowly began to switch back, that the 348 isn't as bad as people were suggesting and it may in fact be "bullet proof"

funny how things change over time

i could swear my F355 is the same 0-60 that my 348 was.....I don't notice sqwat difference in that area.

handling, the F355 is a "little" better

    power steering......you can have that

so what are we left with is styling

348's are becoming the Ferrari to own in the $45k-$65k range

The only way it is bullet proof is if you put a bullet proof vest on it, trust me!

You know, I haven't emptied my Glock into the engine compartment yet, but I'd guess No, it ain't so. :p

Actually, my mechanic pointed me to the 348 long ago as the least fragile and most bullet proof (then he corrected himself), well, comparatively speaking to a Ferrari, engine.

I have never had an engine problem. In fact, I have never had an engine problem in any Italian car I have owned. Now, everything around the engine, that's another story. Turbos (non Ferrari), A/C, idler pullies, water pumps, et al.

Knock on wood, SS 078 is pretty reliable. It better be; the Glock is always close by.

I just returned from my drift park about two hours ago. If drifting my 348 can't kill it, what can?!

I am glad to hear the majority of agree on the "bullet proof" 348 concept.......;)

Well the mechanic sure did say the "engine" itself is bullet proof !! Darn near convinced me on the spot :p. Though I have so many plans and upgrades for my F355. :( ...................

So from what I know now (chaa forgive me ;) ), the 348 has been elevated another step up the "greatness" ladder IMO :D

As you know I have not driven the 348 but did drive 355 and loved it. HOwever, and you'll like this, the 348 interior is often overlooked. The steering wheel on the 348 is great, whereas the 355 has that ghastly air bag, 4 prong, suv thing, yikes...

the 348 wheel is awesome, (like the 550 too) and persumably in ownership the inside matters the most - handling, music, feel, soul, ergonomics, engine, braking, etc etc

Anyway don;t get me worng I love the 355, but the 348 steering wheel is just SOOOOOOOOOooooooo much better than the 355's.

Just revealing my emerging brotherhood tendencies... now if we could get golf clubs in there it oculd be a 328 competitor..

    best,

When I was at the dealer ship the firste time, I meet the chif mechanic. He asked me, " so what car are you here to have a look on?", said a 348 GTB, "ohh great, there is no real problems with those..." I said really ? " well look around, do you see any 348´s in here...?"
And sure enough, the workshop was packed with 360´s 355´s and 2 old TR´s...

Still not sure if the 348 is bullitproff, but I inteend to find out...

If you remember, the early 355's came with a similar wheel to the 348. Before the airbags came in 1995. ;);)
