Does anyone know whether the 348 engine has an engine knock sensor (so that the engine retards timing if fuel is low octane and causes pinking).

I assume if it has one, then the 348 would benefit from high octane fuel (i.e. Shell Optimax at 98 RON). Otherwise I imagine there is no gain from this premium grade fuel.

    Any ideas?

I've read the manual cover to cover and it does not mention the subject one way or the other :(

Knock sensors did not appear on Ferrari V8s until OBDII in 1996.

Section C looks pretty comprehensive in the OM - and you are right, there is no knock sensor.

There probably are some benefits from using Optimax in an engine without a knock sensor, but higher power output is unlikely to be one of them IMO.

    Chris.

Edited to say: Thanks for confirming that Vern, you posted as I was typing..

We all drive Shell Vpower 100 octane here. No problems whatsoever.

Thanks guys, I'll keep using the 98+RON stuff then......just a pity I'll get no extra oomph!
