Help! Engine noise!! First off thanks for any responses and advice!! My situation, my 91 348 was at a shop for a respray for over a year and a half in another state I’m in Texas it was in Louisiana. I have it back with me now, not painted and barely running(long painful story). I drove it to the shop in good running order( engine out service done within about 6k miles). I get it back put a new battery check oil and coolant and give it a start, oil pressure is good and everything seems ok. I open the engine bay and hear what I assume is valve train noise…..tapping that that matches rpms. Any suggestions on what to do next is greatly appreciated
If its valve train, then check oil level first, if good then pop valve covers off and check tappet shim clearance and cam cap torque. Specs are in the WSM. I think clearance is .20 to .50 and torque is 8.8nm if I recall but double check.
If I had a noise like you describe the first thing to do is try to isolate it to a particular area. The good old way is to get a short length of hose and place one end at your ear and then go around the idling engine to see where the sound is coming from. I once had what sounded like a rod issue only to locate it to the front bearing of the AC compressor. Good luck and keep us posted.
Might also be an injector. If an engine out was done, they might have mixed up the biscuit spacers or messed up the valve lash. Either way, get the stethoscope.
