    Hi,

Does anyone out there have a figure of likely total weight for the 348 engine/trans/subframe etc, i.e. the package that is slid out from under the body for accessing items and carrying out cambelt change.

Also I'd appreciate if anyone has any pictures/diagrams of castor 'trolley/dolly' they have used succesfully for this operation.

    Thanks
    Dave

I don't know for sure what the whole thing weighs.

I used a 1000/lb moving dolly I bought from Home Depot for $20. They have for caster wheels on them, are flat and have two side that are carpeted. The dolly took the weight of the entire subframe like a champ. I had ZERO issues with it holding the weight. You can find them at any hardwear store.

Actually I tested it the night before by lowering the car on it and left it over night. In the morning nothing was broken. So I figured if it could hold the car all night the engine wiil be no problem, and it wasn't.

They are so cheap that if you wanted too you could even by two of them, but it isn't nessasary.

Thanks for the info Ernie, I'm in UK but I'll go onto the Home depot website to see if they have a pic. the weight info will be a good guide.

    Much appreciated

Machine mart do a dolly that fits, you could also make some L shaped brackets with castors on the bottom to bolt to the front mounting flanges of the engine subframe ( screwfix do the bits cheaply)

I've just had a quick look on webternet for dollies. Machine Mart do a Clarke one that looks near the mark for about 35 squids. Having seen the weight capacity of those readily available in the UK I think I'll build my own higher carrying capacity. Unfortunately Home Depot don't show a pic of theirs.

Thanks for help Andrew. I'll post how I get on

Here is a link to what the dolly I used looks like.

Mine holds half a ton, and has 1000lbs printed on it. Again I had ZERO problems with it holding the weight. If you get that one, you will what to put the carpeted sides under the subframe.

    Thanks for the pic Ernie.

Unfortunately those I have found readily available in the UK don't seem to go up to the load carrying capacity of the one you mention, so I may have no choice but to mock up something similar.

Soon as I do that and get some info I'm awaiting relating to the cambelt tension (Staeger equivalents and values) I should be good to go.

The tentioner spring does all the work just fine. As a matter of fact the shop manual even says to let the spring put the tention on the belt. But if you have the Staeger already here are the values.

The shop manual says they should be 140 - 160 (addition of the values read on both lines of the Staeger tensiometer)

But that is over kill if you ask me. Just let the spring do the work. Make sure that all of the slack has been taken up by the spring, and your values should come out just fine. Trust me, the spring will put plenty of pressure on the belt.

    Now get busy. :D
