Hi all, First I want to thank all of you guys/gals at this forum I have been lurking for a week or so & did pull the trigger & bought a 348 yesterday (same one as a member here was selling). I believe its a very good example that had a couple issues that were easily resolved...the vents "melting"- forum search & oven cleaner helped me resolve Windows slow...add relays another member made to resolve the slow "low voltage" problems at window motor. Seller also mentioned he had light issues (check engine 1-4) & the slow down light 5-8. On way home (300 miles) the check engine 1-4 did come on some, its odd it seemed once I got down on it with serious driving the light has gone out & not returned... any ideas on that? Other issue showed itself when I washed the engine today, the cat ECU got wet & made the light stay on (cold engine start, would not go out) I removed ECU swapped to other side & presto made that bank light up..problem found, it appears the silicone seal on it had failed you could see a slight gap around back side case edge. I sprayed with WD-40 & hair dryered it reinstalled & light cleared...so now I need to know where to buy another & should I buy 2 since the other cannot be far behind? Thoughts appreciated... Sweet 348 its a 1991 TB. I just think maybe prior owner was discouraged by small issues...I look at it as a puzzle & found some slight joy as to diagnosed & actually did find/correct the problem(s)....all because of you here at the forum. Really neat car, glad I found it & this forum. Give me some tips on the check engine light 1-4 any chance it could be tied to this ECU..I have read & I am leaning to think that it did not. The car has a Tubi exhaust with Cats. 19,000 actual documented miles & 30k service done (yes I have the actual receipts from F.O.D) in 1992 complete with belts, waterpump & clutch-close to 12K was total cost. Again I cannot emphasize enough thank you all for sharing the knowledge you have found out while owning these cars. Regards, Chris
Welcome to the 348 Brotherhood! Your CELs (Check Engine Lights) come with trouble codes to tell you which problem has been detected by an ECU. Ernie did a great write-up on how to check them: http://webpages.charter.net/aircover/348/1994Ferrari348Spider.html#ECUcodes
Although not all belts fail at 6 to 7 years of age, the belts that you read about on Fchat that have failed on 348's tend to be 6 to 7 years old. ...And when I say "belt fails" I mean the tensioner bearings or waterpump bearings or timing belt itself. It's age, not mileage, that seems to kill most belts/bearings. Just something to keep in mind if you are running on 1992 bearings/belt.
I meant in 2002 the 30K was done, oopsie in all my excitement of being a new owner I accidentaly wrote 1992. 2002 30K was done and yes did all the tensioners, belts, waterpump & other stuff..looked really complete. that was done again in 2002 with 8k for miles Chris
2002 major service, 2006 today... don't look now, but according to Ferrari you're a year overdue. Some peeps will tell you 5 years is OK. Re your comment on small issues, it's true. My 328 always has a couple of things that I want to do. I knew that when I bought it, and I just look at it as hobby (for the stuff I can do) or the price for driving something so gorgeous (for the stuff I need my mechanic to do). Congrats and welcome to fchat!!
Ferrari and most mechanics seem to recommend 3 year belt/tensioner/water pump changes. Most of the failures around here seem to start at 6 years. You've gone 4. I'd say that you are in the yellow zone, with redline at the end of 5. Just my opinion.
Your check engine lights and the slow down light are two different things. However there is a possibility that the CEL is from an O2 snsors, but you really won't know until you pull the codes. ND gave you the link on how to pull the codes. If you don't want to get the crank sensor codes, pull them while engine is on. Water and Ferrari electrics DO NOT make a good mix. I highly suggest you go through ALL of the other connections and hit them with some WD40 and blow them out. Other wise you could find yourself with some new misfire problems. Pay special attention to the MAFS. And welcome to the Brotherhood.
The Cat ECU needs to be replaced (dried it worked for awhile now back to keeping light on) its a vescovini 142581 any idea where to locate one?> Also the pushbutton to check my codes on the Motronic behind the seats are missing..I checked both sides I have the plug in loose dangling with no button..Am I missing something or someone rob the button at one time? sooo where do I find a button assembly>? Chris
The cat ECU is here: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=261104 No buttons on your Motronic ECUs? What year is this car?
Hi Chris: Hope you enjoyed your ride home The car was imported from Canada, and maybe that is why there is no button?
Funny that.........i washed my 348 5 days ago and went for a drive straight after and the Slow Down 5-8 light came on. After around 20mins,the light went out. It didnt come on for the rest of that night, around 1 hour after it went out and i havent driven it since. But we will see this weekend when i wash it again
its a 1991 348tb came in from Canada. On each motronic there is a plug in connector but nothing plugged into it- just dangling loose. Small connector Ithink it was 3 pin if memory serves me correct... I cleaned & put dielectric grease on all the engine terminations this AM. Took for a spin runs great but now the check engine 5-8 light comes on after 1/4 mile goes off & comes back on... I shut car off turned back on repeated that again...Any chance its the o2 sensor I did unplug & clean those terminations...Can I just swap leads see if it does 1-4 ? Kinda aggravating since I cannot pull a code Chris
I BOW DOWN IN AWE TO YOU...Up until Saturday I have never even driven a Ferrari never mind work on one, Through reading & problem solving I have resolved that Check Engine 5-8 OK, was a 2 fold problem evidently the O2 sensor went bad & some &())_&%& felt he needed to adjust the MAFS to 685 ohms...well when I switched O2 sensors & reconnected all lights lit up CEL 1-4 CEL 5-8 I became excited because I just knew it was going to be the MAFS ohm reading outta whack...sure enough right side was 383 ohms & left was 685 ohms...when I swapped the sensors it showed me all I needed to see... Quick run down to autozone for a universal Bosch sensor, I made new terminations adjusted the MAFS to 383 ohms unplugged battery for 30 minutes & than reconnected & let idle for 10 before driving ...no lights & she is running like a swiss watch!! Unreal how a complete green Ferrari owner can solve a problem that a mechanic "band-aided" by f'n with MAFS instead of wondering why it needed to be f'd with is unbelievable.. 1. Lessons learned...read read read here at forum. 2. Do not assume system was "factory settings" before you diagnose from scratch 3. Persistance beats resistance Thanks again you guys rock!!
LOL, glad to see you got it fixed. That's what the Brotherhood is all about. Helping each other so we don't get stiffed for repairs. You know the best thing about it, it was FREE!
I saw that, I had one quote coming in suggesting to convert to hyperflow cats...That way you can do away with the Cat ECU's & the car actually breathes better. I dried it out & siliconed the edges so I may just run it awhile & decide later which direction to go in. From what I read the only purpose of it is to warn of high cat temps....Save a potential engine fire if the cats loaded up with fuel. Chris
You probably already know this, but the only time that you can *safely* do away with the cat ECUs is when you do away with cats. Even Hyper-Flow cats can catch on fire if you flood them with fuel.
