348 EXPANSION VALVE INSULATION ?

I just replaced the expansion valve on my 94 Spider. To do the job I had to peel away and remove the black tar like insulation and pretty much destroyed the stuff doing so.
Does anyone here know what this stuff is, where to get it or if there something non OE available?

I have seen folks use insulting tape like that used for house AC pipes. Same stuff used for cars really. Home depot has it. Once stuck on it ir hard to get off without tearing it apart leaving residue and a layer all over. Here is a car product, again same stuff really.
