Why do some V8 Ferrari's have "F" in front of their model designation?

It seems like it's being used on every other model.

    348, F355, 360, F430...

Is that because the one with "F" are derived from the previous model?

I've wondered the same thing myself...

But then again, Ferrari uses "M" for "modificata"--a modified version of the previous model.

For example, the Testarossa evolved into the 512 TR, which evolded into the F512 M.

    But what's with the F?

If I am not mistaken, some models droped the F on the 355. These were the F1 cars...ie it was not F355GTBF1 it was just 355GTBF1.

Well the "F" stands for Ferrari. Ferrari has chosen to use it at times and at times not. As the "TR" stands for Testa Rossa. The numbers of course are usually tied to the engine displacement. As the 355 represents 3.5 liter and 5 valves. Same with 360 3.6 liter and F430 is 4.3 liter.

    Cheers,

As far as I am aware, the letters GTB never appeared in the model designation either (although GTS did of course).

"F" is for Ferrari, simple as that. They use it at times, it has no other meaning. Just off the top of my head, some models that have used it: F430, F355, F512M, F50 and F40.

It could be, as others are F512 M and F40. However the F50 is not derived from any other... or is it from the 333SP???

Anyway, I think it's just about italian madness...

If your F355 Spider had a manual transmission it would be called an F355 Spider, but if it had an F1 transmission the name on the back would change to 355 F1 Spider.

It is just the management changing their mind, nothing more. First, all cars were to have 'F' in front of the number. Then, there was a time when Ferraris had names, e.g. 550 Maranello, 360 Modena. Then we jump back to the F430, but at the same time we have the 575M Maranello and the 612 Scaglietti.

Also, the number convention changes too, e.g. 308 3 litre, 8 cyl, 328 3.2 litre 8 cyl , but then the 355 refers to 3.5litres, 5 valves per cyl. Why not 358??

And in some models, the number refers to the capacity of one cylinder, e.g. 275, 250, 456

    My head hurts...

Why can't they just stick to 911, like Porsche!

    Robert.

    it means "fixed up"

    F355 is a fixed up 348

and the F430 is a fixed up 360
