I'm going nuts trying to find out why my fog lights are not working. With the exception of the fog lights, the rest of the buttons (parking lights, defroster and hazard lights) on the interior consol work and their respective lights turn on. When the fog light button is depressed (with the low beam or high beam lights on) the fog lights do not light up and the light in the console does not turn on. I checked the wiring into the fog light button (in the consol) and it is intact and making connection to the button. I checked the fuses in the hood (checked out okay) and the relay (switched with another relay with the same part number) in the foot well and still not fog lights.

    Some other information:

    1) The car is a 1994 348 TB factory challenge car
    2) The fog lights were definitely working at some point (I've owned the car for 10 years)
    3) The car had the engine out service recently and I do not remember if I ever checked the functionality of the fog lights after the servicing

Any insight into what could cause this problem would be appreciated.

Obviously that circuit has lost power somewhere Alex. :):)

Start with the basics man, get a test light and start checking for power. :):)

Start at the fuses and work your way back. :):)

I have an electrical diagram here for the 348. It will have the fog light circuit in there, trouble is I dont have scanner so I cant scan the page or that section for you. :):)

If I have time later today, I will go through it and see where power comes from for that circuit and I will see if I can give you any more hints and tips along the way. :):)

But get yourself a test light and start checking for power. That is a good start and you will need to do it anyways. :D:D

    Let's narrow this down.

When you turn on the dash lights, does the icon in the fog light switch light up like the other switches light up? If not, then the switch probably ISN'T plugged in correctly.

By any chance, does your car have the switch (next to the fog light switch) that controls the REAR fog lights, or is that space blank?

Have you checked the fog light bulbs themselves? They are common H3 55W bulbs with a single pigtail wire attached, available at any auto parts store. They don't last forever. And a good bulb will not work unless the bulb holder is grounded to complete the circuit. It's also possible that the fog lights are simply not plugged into the harness in the front bumper. WARNING: If you remove the turn signal/fog light assemblies from the bumper to check the bulbs and wiring, be very, very, very careful with them! If you drop one and break it, you'll be sorry. Take the precaution to put a folded blanket on the ground in front of the car while you're working on them.

You're sure that you have checked the correct fuses (#16 and #17 in the front box) and the correct relay ("A" in the step pad fuse box)?

If all of these physical checks turn out OK, it will necessary to move on to testing for power at various points to see if you have an open circuit somewhere.

    Thanks for the responses.

    To answer your questions:

    1) When I turn on the dash lights the icon DOES light up.
    2) The car DOES NOT have a rear fog light switch, but it does have a relay ("R") installed for that option.
    3) I have not checked the bulbs themselves since it appeared that both lights were not working (I will check this next).
    4) I checked fuses #16 and #17 in the front box and switched out relay "A" with relay "R" in the foot well.

I guess it is possible for both fog light bulbs to blow at once, but I did switch out the indicator bulbs (in console) for the fog lights and the hazard lights to see if the bulb was possibly the issue and fog light indicator bulb tested okay when I put it in the hazard light indicator location.

At this point, it would appear that your problem is in the power supply to the switch - I'll study the wiring diagram for suggestions. In the mean time, I would try just taking a simple jumper wire and feeding known power into the recepticles for fuse 16 & 17 in the front fuse box, and see if that causes the fog lights to come on. If it does, you know that the bulbs are OK and the wiring from the fuse panel to the fog lights is OK, and you wouldn't have to remove the fog light assemblies from the bumper.

Edit: Or, if you remove relay "A" from the step pad fuse box, and run a jumper from terminal 30 to terminal 87, that should turn on the fog lights whether the ignition is on or not, by by-passing the switch in the center console.

Thanks. I have to head out of town for a few days, but I'll give that a go as soon as I return.

You guys are great! Thanks for all the help; after getting the test light out and jumping the respective positions of the relay, I figured out the relay I was using to test the fog lights was also defective. After switching it out with a KNOWN good one, the fog lights worked! Again thanks for the guidance.
