Just a quick question to get some feedback. Often times I'll see a 348 with a Front Spoiler re-painted (fairly common) - 90% of the time the orange peel is so bad. What gives? Is this just shotty craftsmanship or is there something about that spoiler that makes is more prone to orange peel?

    Thanks!

Bad work. What needs to be done to get rid of the orange peel is, color sanding, or wet sanding with a very fine grit wet sand paper. Then you buff it out to a nice shine.

Well, a lot of orange peel would better match the Ferrari factory paint job! There is a very good Ferrari paint and body man in the Atlanta area named Bo Pirkle that always questions customers that want their Ferrari repainted "...do you want it repainted like the factory job or do you want a good paint job..." He has showed me new un-sold Ferraris that the dealer will send over to him to be wet-sanded to try to get the orange peel out of the factory paint job. Ferrari is not know for quality paint work.

Is it really heavy orange peel, or is it rocker schutz, a form of chip protection that goes on under the paint?

I know 308s have the rocker schutz, but haven't taken a close look at a 348.

That's what I was going to ask. My (showroom condition, original) 911 has that heavy texture on the rockers. Designed to withstand stone impacts a lot better than the smooth gloss on the rest of the car.

If you don't have this on the 348, I might consider doing during a respray.

Is your spoiler red or black?

The original 348 spoiler on the earlier models, is satin black and has an orange peel texture to it, if this is what you are talking about. Somebody may have painted it red at one time without sanding it smooth first
