thats awfully generous but car is in New-Zealand, hell it still might be cheaper to fly you guys out rather than carry on. I'll get back to you after I do the figures.

Oh yes the boy is serious.

If I have the days off I'm game for going out to Vegas. What say the rest of the Stooges?

You can see a picture of it in this thread from Juan's tranny failure, but the picture of the ring nut is actually from Daniel's old gear box. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174226 Here is another thread from Reiner and Michael's gear boxes. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157349 You can see the actual ring nut from Michael's tranny on page #7. But here is a quick link to post #125 of that page showing it. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137035394&postcount=125

New Zealand!! You are on baby. Set me up with a helicopter pilot who can drop me off at one of those hidden rivers for an awesome flyfishing trip and we would be friends for life!

Stooges in Vegas with Ernie and Plugzit???? Oh yeah that would be too fun. We could even get a track day in at spring mountain if we time it right. Then we can test our work.

well damn! if you're actually serious, there's a very serious possibility that i'll take you up on it!!
I need to have you investigate a gearbox noise for me too... I have a sound that is similar to a bad TO bearing. The mechanic that worked on it for the last 7 years says that its due to gearbox & flywheel mods that he did, I trust the guy, but it just dont seem right and sounds really bad.

    steve,

What do you need done to your car and how fast do you need it done? I'll need to see what clubs are running at spring mountain raceway. perhaps we could all have some fun. Do you have a pretty good stock of tools?

I actually assumed you were totally kidding about that offer... hence my original comment.
Actually i'm not in need of a major for another 3.5 years... based on the cars prior service history and my idea of an adequately maintained, DRIVEN Ferrari (5 years or 30K miles).

BUT, I would like my gearbox totally inspected for the usual suspects, and to determine 100% what the noise is, and that its NOT going to eventually granade my tranny... and hopefully maybe even eliminate the noise, and possibly do a full clutch job... based on what we find.
The car runs beautifully... but it makes a few really uncool noises, I just need someone to tell me why, and perhaps resolve them.

I'm in no hurry... unless I go BOOM, then i'll eat those words and kill myself.
I have alot of tools AND mechanical skills... between me and my buddy/neighbor across the street, we have at least one of every tool there is. We have GOOD TOOLS, but no Ferrari-specific tools other than the nifty socket I made to get the steering wheel nut off! Plenty of floor jacks, stands, etc. What I DONT HAVE is much money!

480$ for one bearing is extortion. When I had this problem on my 348 I was able to source a similar bearing (non-Ferrari) and had it machined to spec for less than 100$.
For those of you who are facing this issue or will face this issue, once again I recommend spherics bearings in Gardena (CA).

(no affiliation, just a happy customer).

we are talking about a small mom+pop shop in an industrial neighborhood. they are not going to have a flashy web site.
Shops like that are my favorite because they usually do good work at fair prices...

I was wondering what happended to this thread, and I thought I had seen this. Can you provide more info, contact, specs, etc. So the total was less than $100? It will not help me (as my problems are behind me) but as you mentioned, others.

sorry Juan-Manuel, whatever I knew i wrote up in the previous thread you mentioned, and I think it should all still be there.
you can find spherics by going on a online yellow page for greater LA, but i think i had also added their phone no to the info in the previous thread.

Anyways, they will take a double ball bearing with similar dimensions as the original SKF and machine a groove, then add a steel ring to work like a lip
    (original bearing had a lip).

well in that case let us know when you need help. If you drive the 348 out to LA for some reason any or all of the stooges can give you car a listen and the dissagree on the problem. If you were really slick you could post a sound clip and we could take guesses. I'll probalby be at spring mtn at least once this year too.

I was with Reiner when he came up with the "reiner bearing" I took the pictures and posted them on Fchat so there are here somewhere. I can't remember the thread title. I bet NoDoubt could find it. Reiner's solution is quite elegant and simple. It is the ultimate in going cheap but getting a better bearing. I assume Reiner's car is running perfectly.

I'd be honored to get your help! i'm gonna work on this sound clip thing...I didnt realize you were in LA, do you by chance know of a guy named Joe that owns Concours Automotive in La Habra ? If you do, he's the guy that has worked on my car since 1999 and did the all the mods.

Joe is my friend! I can do just about anything on a Ferrari but when I have questions I ask Joe. I hope he did good things for you. He is an excellent mechanic and knows alot about racing Ferraris.

well thats good to hear!! As I said in an earlier post, I totally trust him, but this situation is just so weird. And the racket this thing makes upsets me no matter how long ive been trying to ignore it.
Are you familiar with the gearbox and flywheel mods he does on these? I dont totally understand it myself. Something about removing the grease from the flywheel and welding it all together? He also did some kind of ''gearbox modification'' that I believe has something to do with that ringnut.
For the record, I changed the gear oil about 6 weeks ago... the drain plug magnet had almost nothing on it... which just adds to the mystery!

I tried to make a sound file... it turned out like crap, i'm gonna pickup a new microphone and try again tomorrow.
