Watched Sandy Eggo's bumpercam video, which is very cool, and noticed the same type of gear whine I have in my 348.

Because of the problems 348 boxes have had with self loosening ring nuts, after purchasing my car the box and diff were dismantled, inspected and reassembled. I noticed the whine first time I drove the car with the lid off, both before and after the inspection.
Last month, my son came to town and I asked him to make a full throttle accelaration with me outside the car since we had recently installed a stebro exhaust.
    1. The Stebro sounds amazing outside the car, including during a high speed pass. It is not annoying inside the car but really comes alive when you stand on it.
    2. The gear whine is quite noticable during half throttle and full throttle take off.
I can live with this, just how abnormal is it? Diff all checked out good.... only replaced the positraction discs (probably the wrong term) when dismantled. Yes the car was probably tracked before I got it. Running Redline 75-80 NS.

Yeah, FWIW, I was wondering the same about my car after watching the video. I asked the guys who did my PPI to watch the video and they said my gearbox sounded very normal.

If you're concerned I would get a trusted mechanic with lots of 348 experience to have a listen. Not sure where in SoCal you are but Chris Dugan at Cavallo Motorsports in Carlsbad is a principal there and head mechanic who also happens to own a 348. I would trust his word on the topic. Otherwise, get yourself a bumper-cam and go shoot some video to post here for the brotherhood to pass judgment.

My 348ts transmission had a whining sound. I ignored it for about 100 miles. My transmission became hamburger meat, and lots and lots of money was extracted from my wallet.

In other words, my suggestion would be "stop driving". Get a tech with 348 experience to check it out.

    Mike,

You are in socal? The brothers here have not met you yet and we need very little excuse to get together. So one of these days you should come meet plugzit, ernie, vince and myself. we'll give your car a listen and give you a stooges opinion. It may cost you a lot of chicken wings however! We always meet around lunchtime then tell lies to each other.

I don't have that metallic gear whine in my 348 Spider. It took me about 45 seconds into Sandy's video before I really heard it there on his car, though.

FBB - yes I intend to meet you guys when I retire in May. Until then, I am working in Venezuela with little time in the USA to drive the car. I've already put 1500 miles on the car since I got it, so I have my doubts that the thing is going to blow up on me. I take it from the responses that whine is abnormal. This is my 8th F-car, and the only one that had a whine.
Sandy Eggo - Chris Dugan did the work! Cavallo Motorsports gets my business, both with the 365GTC/4 (currently getting motor rebuild) and the 348. Next time you visit Cavallo, ask Chris to show you the C/4 motor work in progress.
I'll look you up mid year. My place is in Valley Center.
