Noted with interest Ric’s gearbox picture. In the midst of a major service on my 348 spider. Also considering checking the gearbox for service. Debating opening the gearbox myself or sending out.
The photo shows the final drive riding in 2 large tapered bearings. Looking at the workshop manual, these bearings are preloaded 3.8~4.0kg. Appears to be measured with a unique Ferrari special tool. The preload is then adjusted using various thickness shims. If the bearings are preloaded it is safe to assume there should be no play in the axle/ flanges.
Checking my gearbox with a dial indicator, I measure approximately 0.020 endplay at the flange on 1 side and 0.015 on the other. The flanges also appear to float, not rigid.
If my bearings were preloaded properly, I would assume there should be 0.00 endplay and no side to side movement of the flanges.
Please advise if I am interpreting this assembly correctly.
