OK fatbilliebob, turns out Emco built the transmission, the drop gears were done by them. They appear to be micheloto copies. I visited their website and it appears they build some very serious race products for Indy, NASCAR, etc.

The transmission only has 7k since rebuild, I also just replaced the rear right hub. It too had been replaced.

1-any theories on what caused this?

2-I saw an add for a 355 gear box, it said it will fit the 348. Is a six gear upgrade worthwhile?

3-Where can I get a rebuilt or used transmission/gearbox. I found one from GT Autoparts for 5500 without a core. Does this price seem fair? Suggestions are welcome.

4-I have enjoyed the lower gear ratio. I don't drive over 140 much anyway. Should I rebuild this one (personal preferance I know, kinda like should I stay or should I go now, if I stay there may be trouble...Kinks?

Let her fly, suggestions are why I like this site.

Seems cheap if it works. Problem is you don't know how good that box is.

Rebuilding a standard 348 GB has been quoted to me twice by dealers and independants as a 15k to 17k job! To me in my hands these are simple to rebuild. However, in reality I have seen even real mechanics butcher these GB's. Your GB will be especially difficult to rebuild because you realy don't know for sure 1) what is wrong 2) what is stock and what is not. If you have to do any fabrication of custom gears you are in for some bigger bucks.

Personally, I would love to take your Gb apart just to see what makes it tick. It sounds interesting. If you had all the right parts I could have the GB apart and back together easily in a weekend. The problem is 1) you always need one more part that has to be ordered, 2) we are 3000miles apart. However, someone FedExed me their GB once and I fixed it. 3) you really don't know what is wrong and sometimes you can't tell just by tearing it down. So what do you do if it isn't obvious? Replacing all the parts is big bucks! So you have to get lucky and during the teardown hopefully see some bad gears, shattered syncro ring, eaten main shaft or something that will lead you to believe that you can have a good running GB after it is done.

I don't remember the actual problem except something like noisy whine after a gear lube change?
