I have a 1994 348 with a broken glove box lid strut. I have purchased two online only to be sent the wrong part twice. I posted a pic of the broken yet correct strut on the top and on the bottom is the part sent to me. Both of the incorrect struts were the same and were advertised by parts specialists as one that would fit a 348. As you can see the correct one is smaller. The strut that fits my car is a Stabilus Lift-O-Mat #1686AW 0050N. The incorrect ones are Stabilus Lift-O-Mat #641235 0010N. Has anyone else run into this issue? If so did you eventually find the correct part. Thanks, Don.

    Don -

    They all suck.

Whether it is the correct size or not, I'm afraid the lifespan of these glovebox struts is woefully short. We stopped selling them a few years ago, simply because they perform so poorly. Maybe the longer one will have move tension and perhaps be more durable?

Daniel/Ricambi is correct the glove box struts & any available replacements are poor performers. Search the 348 forum there was a member creating a spring tensioned cylinder as a fix/solution. Not sure how the final creation worked.

I saw a thread somewhere where someone had taken a small rubber o-ring that would fit somewhat tight around the lifting rod and glued it to the top of the strut canister. The friction was enough to hold the glove box open when lifted. To close the lid just use a bit of force to run the rod back into the canister.

The guy that built the spring loaded units had what I thought was a pretty nice solution but I thought they were priced a bit high so I didn't go that route. As crappy as the new units are, maybe I should have.

I had my machanic bend the strut ever so slightly and it worked for a while. It now only holds at about half the normal hight extension. I think with a bit more bending of the strut it will hold at full extension and work long term. Has anyone else tried this and had long term success?

Sorry, I am not quite sure what you mean. Which strut did you bend? The correct one or the incorrect one which is slightly longer? And can you take a pic of the bent strut in action and show us please? Many thanks.

I think he means his mechanic put a very small bend in the shaft of the strut. (The thin metal part)

Have seen this done many times before on car bonnet struts by owners.

It doesn't really fix anything, bending it pretty much ****s it completely, but it will hold for a little longer before the gas totally escapes past the seal.

I just replace em when I see them like this. Bonnet struts are very cheap these days to buy.

I didn't either. Plus, I get to feel good about recycling a product, and limiting my carbon footprint! Haha. $11 to ship it to Oh Canada. The NSX strut is unique, and in my opinion, OE is really the only way to go to get a proper fit.

Like many I went down the route of replacing this part early into ownership many years back, you'll generally only bother once then live with actually having to 'hold' the lid open, hardly a biggie in the grand scheme of things.

I'm simply not prepared to get 'shafted' by F on this part over and over and suggest you don't either.

Funny enough, I tried mine the other day and it held up, hmmm highly variable then I'd say. Bit like my engine cover struts, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't

Did you try fitting the longer one to see if it fits/works?

I don't think the original one in mine lasted more than a month or two and the replacement I bought years later lasted only a short time as well.

P.S. not offering to make the above, just showing how to DYI. It's pretty simple and has worked for years.

My 348 had a brand new one installed 6 months ago. Still going perfectly fine: it's very strong actually, maybe even a little bit too strong (I need to pay attention to hold the glovebox when I close it or it closes too fast / strongly).

I'll try to check the ref / snap a pic next time I take my 348 out.

you could take a piece of PVC pipe that will barely slide over the strut and is just a little shorter than the rod. When you open the glove box it will slide down and prop it open. To close, just move the pvc so it slides back over the strut. Make sense?

Not my choice, but it will work in a bind.

I had the same problem, bought from an aftermarket Ferrari parts house, too big, it won't fit, I tried. Ended up going to Ferrari for the real thing. They had it and at a reasonable price, I few bucks more than the aftermarket place but it fit. Still working after a couple of months!
