First post so fingers crossed... My 348 was recently serviced less than 500ks ago n had the belts done etc. All running A ok then 30mis into a drive last weekend, it felt like it started running on 1 bank or in limp mode then came good after a couple of minutes. It ran well for another 20 mins then did it again n by the time I got to 10ks from home it had gone in limp mode full time. I saw the slow down light come on briefly for a few seconds then out again. I read a few posts re disconnecting the battery so to reset the ECU codes but I'm not sure if this could lead to other issues or for loss of error codes which may mean the workshop won't be able to trace errors. Looking for advice...

It will lead to the loss of error codes. Get the codes from the computers first and then post them. You can get the codes yourself, you don't need to take it anywhere. You may even be able to fix it yourself and save the money.

    go here and read: http://www.my348.com/348.html#ECUcodes

Save the link for future reference, matter of fact read everything when you have time.

I found one of the ground wires loose on the driver side (US) valve cover. They are on the upper edge towards the rear. Mine did the exact same thing. Found it by the bolt falling on the garage floor while pondering the motor as it ran, not by incredible diagnostic skill!

Thanks Mike, I had a quick read and although it sounds complicated, I'm sure there's a sequence which will be easy to figure out once I get the cover off to expose the ECU. Re your comment about "posting the error codes" do you mean posting on the forum, I.e to get advice on a fix? Or is it a case of resetting the codes? Sorry if I'm missing the point..!

Yup. You should search the forum as well, but post the codes here and let us know. Lots of people here have great insight into these things and many have gone though what you are going through.

Are you sure it was a slow down light that came on, and not a CEL? I had a similar issue about a month ago but had the CEL flash a couple of times. Did the ECU reset and the engine still only ran on one bank - confirmed which side by feeling the cats after a short idle - and no CEL. My issue was a high pressure fuel line on the right side fuel pump had become disconnected inside the fuel tank. So the fuel pump was just recirculating fuel inside the tank. Replaced that fuel line and all was good.

I had the EXACT same behavior from my 348 when I first got it in 2008. A bank would kick out, the slow downlight (it was def the slowdown and not the CEL) light might come on, it might not, then after 10 to 30 seconds, all would be right again. It was super inconsistent. It might happen two or three times on a drive, or I might go on half a dozen short drives and not have it happen at all.

As was already mentioned, I pulled the error codes and had a "4121" which pointed to the Cat control unit. After posting here, the advice was to pull them out (you have two) and re-install them, but swap sides. If the opposite side starts to display the same issues, then you know it's a bad unit... and these units have a reputation for being twitchy.

Anyway, I would think that the first thing to do would be pull the error codes. Once you have that info, it will definitely indicate the next troubleshooting step.
