Man this thing gets great gas milage!!!

Ever since I have had my car back on the road I have been driving it at least three times a week. The first few weeks it was mainly around town driving. I was getting about 16-17mpg out of it. But I think that was mainly due to me being so happy I was finally able to drive my 348 again that I was constantly on the "loud peddle".

Well this last week I was able to put 388 miles of highway driving on it. So to this morning the fuel light starts to come on. I drive it about another 20 miles then figure I need to fill'er up. Pump the gas in, and the nozzle clicks off at 14 gallons. Huh??? The last time I filled it up it didn't even have 300 miles on the odometer and it took 20 gallons? Maybe the nozzle is acting weird? So I squeeze the handle, a little bit more gas goes in the tank, and again *click*, it shuts off. What the? Pull the nozzle out, look at it, put it back in, squeeze, *click* again. I figure before I give my car a gasoline bath I better put the nozzle back.

I get in the car look at the trip meter and it's reading 388.4 miles, the gas pump reads 14.7 gallons. A quick use of the calculator on my cell phone gives me a mpg = 26.4! WOW!!

I just couldn't believe that it got that good gas milage? The manual says it gets 24mpg, and I beat that by over 2mpg not even trying. They must have calculated that averaging 100mph. I think my average was around 75mph, with some fun full throttle bursts getting onto the freeway.

It sure is nice to know that not only are out cars fun to drive, but they aren't gas guzzlers either. I think I'm gonna see IF I can force myself to drive 65mph for just one full tank just to see what it will really do.

How about the rest of you guys? What kind of gas milage have you seen?

    I believe it!

My (somewhat heftier than the 348) 1989 Mondial t coupe gets 25 miles per gallon for normal highway driving...

And get this! For completely maniacal highway driving -- I mean, over 100 miles/hour and redlining the it at every possible opportunity on a multi-state trip -- the car gets 18+ miles/gallon! Once, I drove from Arizona to Texas (and back to Arizona) in this thing like a complete maniac -- really enjoying the car and averaging about 100-110 miles/hour -- and I couldn't believe the gas mileage!

Long live the 3.4 engine :)

I've never really measured the MPG in mine, but I agree -- it is surprisingly efficient, even when pounding it on track.

Mine is the same way... I drive like a lunatic, and I still get great mileage!
I'm always quick to point out to the cynical that my 348 gets better mileage than my Chevy Astro work van, AND my '02 Miata did!

I do not normally check on my mileage, as I normally fill up when it is around 1/2 tank (or sooner), but one trip I filled up the 348, drove 230 miles allmost all highway at a steady @ 70-75ish the entire way, got back to fill the car up and it was 32mpg!

I double checked the math, and I knew the milage was correct, as I had done the drive before in other cars (and the 348 as well).

I fully do not expect to get that kind of mileage during my normal "Point A to Point A" drives.

You know I don't know what percentage error it does or doesn't have? I'm gonna have to see when the next time AAA is doing speedometer testing in my area and get my car on the rollers.

As the fuel gauge is unreliable, I usually fill it up at the 250 mile mark. It is never empty at that level and I have averaged about 80 miles daily of mixed driving. That translates into 60 liters per fill thus about 20 mpg... What hurts is the £60 / USD 100 the 60 liters cost me which corresponds to USD 7 per gallon. Why do you all get so upset when your gallon hits USD 4 - you're so spoiled there!!!

I know you did Vince, but the only mod I have on my car so far is the ported runners. Ozzy is making my muffler, so I'm still running with the stock DOUBLE cans. I don't even have my throttle bodies ported yet.

When we picked up our jewel in California we drove all over and had a blast. We were averaging 24-26 MPG on the way back to Houston. I was shocked...

What's really weird is that mine is running 10 miles per hour while it sits in the garage, and uses NO gas in the process. :)

+1 People thought I was joking when I would tell them that the 348 was the most fuel efficient vehicle I own. It could get better mileage out of it than an '03 Ford Escape V6, '06 Ford Freestyle 3.0 V6, '05 Mazda 6 3.0 V6, '07 Ford Edge 3.5 V6, '07 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 V8. Okay, the last one was not that surprising. Man, just realized, that's a lot of Ford vehicles!

I got ~21mpg on a 1700 mile journey. That included a lot of high speed driving with lots of gratuitous acceleration. That was the last time I measured the gas mileage. The 348 is very efficient.

Okay so today I did my best to drive slower. I managed to drive about 70mph, but a couple of times a had a few full throttle squirts. I'll see if I can drive 65 tomorrow. But MAN is it HARD! For what ever reason I just cannot stand driving so slow in the Ferrari. All of my other cars I have to problem putting along. There is just something about driving slow in a Ferrari that just doesn't feel right. I get kind of an antsy feeling, if you know what I mean? But I think I can stick it out till this tank is used up. I really wanna see just how good of gas milage this thing is capable of.

I know this is nuts talking about fuel efficiency for a FERRARI, but I just gotta see. Curious minds wanna know.

The operative word here is efficiency. Our cars are more efficient at using the fuel it burns than most. It's more than having an engine with greater volumetric efficiency (that is getting the most out of the gas it burns); it's also about being weighting and aerodynamically efficient.

It is truly amazing how efficient the 348 is. Even at a steady clip of 85 -90mph from SD to LV I get 25mpg. unlike my more modern 06 Maserati Gransport that drinks, and drinks, and drinks and just isn't as much of a pleasure to drive.

I love the ever increasing mileage figures in this thread, so here's mine:

I've been driving 300-400 mph all last week and I keep having siphon gas out of the tank every time I stop to keep it from overflowing.

Seriously, though, 16 mpg is the best I've ever gotten in the F355. Doesn't matter. I'd rather push a Ferrari than drive most anything else.
