Guys, My friend's 348 randomly started having this problem. When the headlights are turned on they open and close over and over again until they are turned off, at which time they stop wherever they happen to be. Can someone chime in on how to fix this problem? Thanks
Are both headlights opening and closing in unison, together? If so, that would seem to rule out a problem with the headlight motors themselves. You might want to check relay "A" in the front fuse panel, which is identified as "control relay for actuating headlamp lift". It's supposed to be a Bosch #0332204101. That would be a start. Also, can you tell us if there are any other problems with the lighting, or if any modifications have been done on the wiring, or if any body repairs have been done recently, anything that might help to aid in the diagnosis? Has your friend had the car long? Did the lights work correctly up until recently? Is it possible that an alarm system has been added that might be tied into the lights? We'll figure it out!
I remember when I first got my car back together and on the road. I had one headlight that would come up while the other went down! It made three of us bust a gut laughing with beers in hand It was one of those car moments I'll never forget. It turned out to be the linkage, but yours is most definately is in the electricals. Check relays!
Thanks for the quick reply. He has only had the car a few months. Both lights go up and down together, full length so I know the motors are good. The only work that was done recently was a new headunit which was not tied into the lights at all. I feel that something was done when it was installed, so that limits the problem to under the console/fusebox area. I will check that relay and poke around a little more and hopefully find the problem.
My passenger light bucket was also bouncing-I just changed the relays and voila-problem gone! Thank the brotherhood for great advice!
Thanks fixed the problem. Someone had played with the relays and switched the control for the limits from a NO to NC relay. Thanks guys!
