    Good day everyone,

I am considering purchasing a 348 with what appears to be a heater core leak. The dealer has (temporarily) bypassed the core so that coolant would not leak into the cabin. Consequently, I was curious as to how difficult it is to remove... Sadly, I do not have a parts manual and I am uncertain as to the location of the core... is it like the 308... upfront ... or is it like other cars where the core is up under the dash.

Anyway, any insight and advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Sam

I've never removed the heater assembly from my 348, but I believe that the entire thing can be removed from inside the trunk, after removing the trunk lining. The shop manual isn't much help. I don't think it's really designed to repair a leaking core, you are naturally expected to just buy the entire "evaporator set" including a new core. Are you sure it's leaking actual coolant into the interior, and not rainwater or condensation?

I've never replaced a heater core on an F-car, but I have replaced them on two other cars. Each one took me about 10 hours to replace, and both required some serious disassembly.

I will venture to guess that the dealer has bypassed the heater core due to cost. The two Fords I did got quotes of about $1000 from the local Ford dealer. I can only assume that a cert. F-char mechanic will charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $5k.

If you live in SoCal, no big deal. But if it gets cold where you live, either ask the dealer for a big discount, or ask him to replace the core at no cost. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a real bear of a replacement on your hands.

    Good day Jeff,

Thanks for the reply and the picture! Sadly, I do not know know what the exact issue or fluid is, as I was told that the heater is not functioning because of a leaky pipe. Consequently, the Ferrari dealer bypassed the heater/pipe in order to prevent "fluid" from entering the cabin. Again, this is 2nd hand information. Thus, I surmised that the heater core could be leaking, as I have seen this before on other cars (Ferrari included)... It was just a thought.

    Cheers,

    Sam
