Hi, Please go slow with me I have never owned a Ferrari. I have owned many types of cars and have come across an opportunity to own a 348 and would like to get your opinions of the car. The car is listed on ebay, link below. Please let me know what I should look for on a 1991 348 with 38k mile. Based on the information the dealer has provided the car had the 30k service. This will not be a daily driver. Please let me know what you think of the car, what I should look for and ask about the car. What are 348's with 38k mile going for?

Welcome! There are tons of threads on this subject, just use the search feature on the upper left side of the page. Prices have been coming down lately but be ever so wary and careful not to get a car that is a problem child.

Get a PPI done and read some of the threads about 348's on the site. It is a great car. I have one and can personally vouch for it!

Read, read, and read some more. Be patient. Be patient. Be patient.

According to the pictures in the ad, the 30K service was performed in 2002. If so, it is time for another one.

Belt service intervals should not go more than 5 years. This car is overdue for a belt service already. Plan on $6K or more unless you plan to do the service yourself.

Excellent info on what to look for here http://www.club348.com/technical/Tech/348.html

Probaly $6k if you pay someone to do the work, maybe less than $1k if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.... all being well....

Ebay ad looks great, but check into it.

I think the services is going to be a minimum of $7.5k - the water pumps are really pricey now. I am speccing out my service and the components itself comes to about $2500 (new water pump + Hill Engg tensioner bearings .. etc)

Looking at the pictures, my guess is the car has been repainted. You'll notice along the belt line it's red ... its should be black. You may want to see if it was re-painted and why. Not that repainting it is bad, it's just bad if it's been hit.

Plus the rear deck is red by the window - should be black on this year. Interior looks really nice.

It does need a major. $7k is a good estimate, maybe more could be less. I think it's a fair price if everything checks out. May want to push on the service issue, and check the re-paint, you might be able to get them down a bit.

No they are on backwards, both the fronts and rears. I sent and email and got a response that they were going to swap them, but apparently no new pics for this ebay go...or they were being nice and didn't believe me, but they are on backwards.

If the wheels are swapped from left to right, and right to left, to get the wheels on correctly, the tires may be rotating backwards, so check the arrows on the tires. Never can tell how the wheels were on when the tires were put on.

The car looks pretty nice. It did have some paintwork on the valances, as Traimpz348 posted, but a lot of 348s got that - doesn't mean it was in a collision. The price isn't bad, probably because it's an orphan at a Porsche dealer, but I wouldn't go $40K on it if the bidding continues.

I like how the interior looks well-kept -- the plastic trim has probably been restored or replaced, and the leather looks well-cared for based on the pics.

If you're not familiar with Ferraris, I'd suggest having a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) done by a knowledgeable, nearby Ferrari mechanic. The 348s have a few serious potential issues, one of which is a gearbox failure that could run you a good chunk of the purchase price to put right.

Also, not sure about '91s, but the dual-plate clutch on the earlier 348s can cost several thouand dollars to replace.

And as mentioned, the car is due for a major service, which requires engine removal and can run $7K+.

Just keep in mind that with Ferraris the purchase price is often the tip of the iceberg. I'd recommend having a $10K cash reserve after buying the car to cover the service and incidentals that may need sorting.

Thanks for everyone's input and advice. I deliberately left out many of the details on the deal so the matter would be less confusing.

The deal on the 348 was an even trade meaning NO cash. I had a 1934 ford (fiberglass) hot rod, they had the 348. As I said previously a Ferrari was on the list in my head of cars I will own. Given the custom nature of the 1934 the values are all over the place. While the 34 ford and the 348 and very different cars, I am a car nut and I have and have had many different cars in the past from 930's, muscle cars, hot rods mud trucks etc. The 348 checked out and only had minor/typical issue like slow windows and the items pointed out, wheels are on wrong side, painted lowers and rear deck. The car has a clean history, documentation and everything else checked out. The 348 also had the alternator and water pump replace and the belts have also been change since the 30k service. The tires are directional so the wheels can not simply be moved to the correct side..

I did make the trade. My first impressions are the car does not have near the power of the 34 or my old Porsches but is fun to drive with great looks
