348 Intake Plemum

    I have heard a lot about the European intake plenum for the 348 and its ability to flow more air as its significantly larger thus making more horse power. Does anyone know where I could go about obtaining one of there or even know the part number for it? I have never actually seen one in person and am more going on hearsay here than anything else but just wanted to see if I can get my hands on one.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    The 1994/95 348's had 320hp in Euro trim, 312hp in U.S. trim.

    The Euro cars had a slightly larger intake plenum, but more significantly, different exhaust cam timing that traded a little bit of low-end torque (which is what you want in U.S. traffic) for absolute top-end horsepower (which is what you want on the Autobahn).

    All 348's can have the Euro exhaust cam timing (just about for free), as it just takes a different belt and some one-time re-indexing (which can be done at your next major service)...but your exhaust cam pulley is already made for it. You just have to choose between a little extra low-end torque or a little extra horsepower that you will only see at 7800 RPMs.

    The race-only 348 Competizione's had 360hp from the factory (better ECU chips, Euro-exhaust cam timing, two "straight" intake air filters instead of the one common airbox, no cats, and the Euro intake plenum.

    Race-shops then further bumped up those cars to 500hp.

    No Doubt is undoubtedly right !

    US Cars get "Suction manifold" 149503 and 149504 while the rest of the world gets 150465 and 150466. Don't even ask about swaping yours out. They're $2500/side roughly.

    Having said that... I inherited one from the old Sodacom's inventory. I'm using it to hold pens and pencils, some jelly beans, and some of Luca's baby wipes right now. It'd make a pretty cool bong.

    NoDoubt thanks for the reply. I already have my exhaust cams setup to Euro spec, as well as a host of other things done to the car. I was just kicking around winter projects besides rebuilding my suspension and thought this wouldnt be a bad one until I read the price! Ouch $2500/side is just insane! I put off the full on rebuild this winter to cut costs to get myself a DSR or CSR car so I think I will have to pass on this as well. Next year I will just have to have the plenum extrude honed and then port matched to get the same effect at probably 1/20th the cost. :)

    Your 1/20th the cost will perform about 1/20th as well it is not just about flow but helmholtz resonance. There is more science to it that you think....

    Very wise...question is did Ferrari take in to account and optimize the intake for helmholtz back in 1987/8 when this car was being developed or is the european intake just more flow?

    One can only guess. As much as I like to believe that Ferrari were thinking ahead enough back in the day to take advantage of helmholtz to get a little pressure boost in the intake I just am not sure given how the rest of the engine is put together. But then again I can be wrong....more than likely the 355 would be the first car they started thinking about this on it seems to me.

    Either way I am not going to worry about it till next year anyway. :) Got to get the suspension tore off here and get in touch with Rob.
