Has anybody been succesful in removing the pasenger side gearbox bearings without destroying the cages? They will be replaced but I hate to have to pull on the cages and I don't want to pull from behind the gears for fear of dinging the teeth. I figure I will have to cut off the cages and pull on the inner race but wanted to ask here first as I like to keep things intact if I can.

Have you tried warming them up with a torch so the inner race expands? Maybe try using a nylon/plastic wedge between the bearing and the gear to get them to slide off?
Or some "love" taps on the shaft to get it to move and create a little bit of room to get between the bearing and gear.

58K miles first take appart judging by white RTV still on differential splines

    Problems spotted thus far:

    1) Clutch shaft wasted (New shaft & gear set ordered)
    2) Differential bearings worn out
    3) Ringnuts loose on Main & Layshafts
    4) Aluminum oil galley plug in Layshaft backed out.
    5) Mainshaft and Layshaft end bearing show wear

Yep tried it, and got it pretty damn hot but does not budge. Don't want to go super extreme with heat though as it is possible to cook them together and then it just gets nasty. I'm still trying to be gentle but if I have to cut the cages off then a little heat and a trusty puller should get the inner races to move.

When we tore TheOnlyest's gearbox apart, we basically placed a block of aluminum over the ended of the shaft (a nice thick block of nylon would work too) and then proceeded to beat the shaft out. But we were tearing the gearbox completely down. I think you're just replacing the outer bearings? I'm assuming you have access to a shop press, so you could try pressing out the shaft just enough to get the bearing to start moving off the shaft, then wedge it off the rest of the way. But then again you will have to be careful with the bearings inside of the box.

    Never mind my last post.

Sounds like a complete tear down. Just press it out via the shaft. At least that's what we did (beat it out that is). Hit up Plugzit and fatbillybob to see what they have to say.

All the needed tools are in house. This box is getting taken down completely as well. Drivers side is already fully dissasembled. From the looks of it you would have to push on the drivers side and therefore these come out assembled correct? The gears in the middle section just kind of hang out until the shafts are out right?

Ooooo........ I'm trying to remember which side comes out which? Yeah I think your right, the shaft comes out on the non-oil pump side. No the gears don't come out in one piece. Well maybe??? We always seemed to get those outer bearings off. I forget why, but I think the outer bearing have to come off, but I can't remember why at the moment. There is also a bearing race right in the middle of the shaft that is a bit of a pain to get out. Plus the inner roller bearings WILL go all over the place. So you may wanna stuff some rags in there to try and keep they from going all over the shop floor. Be careful with the small stop "washers" that are screwed to the sides. They are held in place with allen bolts, and can get bent if you aren't looking for them. They hold the outer race, of the inner roller bearings, in place.

I have taken it out the shaft two different ways. 1) The way fatbillybob does it, you put some blocks on the inside of the case to keep the big gear in place. 2) The other way, I let the the big gear rest against the side of the inner case walls, then have some one hold the shaft centered. Either way the big gear is what pushes off the inner race of the bearing in the middle of the shaft. You'll see what IM talking about once you start pressing the shaft out. We haven't figured out a way to get a puller in there, and seems to be the only way to get it out.

Maybe one of the other Stooges will chime in here, as I'm sure I forgot something?
If you want pm me your number and I'll give you a call.

    Bump

Can anybody confirm that which way the shafts need to be driven out? I know that the layshaft needs to come out first and it looks like it needs to be driven towards the oil pump side. This should force the bearing off in the process.

It looks like the main shaft needs to be driven out towards the non oil pump side and the bearing can then be pressed off in a bearing press.
