348 Major, Alternative Parts

Ok, so I see it now. But a quick question, since the 348's have self diagnosing software, wont it it automatically negate that. meaning if this is to give more fuel or air (not sure which) wont the system automatically go back to its pre-programed levels?

 

That's a mechanical air bypass for when your tb is closed (i.e. at "idle"). To compensate for clogged or closed bypass valves, your engine computer will try to rev your motor...not a great thing and certainly not always fast enough to prevent the motor from stalling.

Even at idle your motor needs some air to keep running, hence the bypass.

 

No Doubt, thanks for the info, will be working on it tomorrow or more likely on Saturday Morning, and will let you know the results. Just in case the 02 sensor is sitting on my desk, will also be changing that aswell. Dont want to take any chances, just want to make sure its running properly! Odly enough drove it on Monday and it drove perfectly, although I did have the check engine light come on and off. Shut it down for a minute cut off the battery and a minute later reconnected and the light would dissapear. But yesterday, it just kept coming on and off on its own, thats when my mechanic plugged it in, and mentioned the 02 sensor acting up. Will see.

 

No offense at all to Boston residents, but it does not surprise me this discussion is happening for a Boston area issue. I have had a lot but bad luck dealing with sports car mechanics in the Boston area who believe they are God's gift to the Ferrari world. I am glad Ferrari of New England is willing to work with you on this one, and the advice given by the guys 'in the know' on this forum is better than anything handed out by most dealer mechanics. Oh, and replace those O2 sensors with Walker's while you are in there.

 

Don't be afraid to call an ace a ace. I ran across the same problem years ago with a plumber that I used for many years. They tried to charge me ~$600-700 to replace a bathtub faucet in a rental property of mine. The problem that I had is that the plumber had full access to the pipes. The wall was already removed before he arrived, so the only work that he had to due was remove the old faucet and install the new faucet. They tried to tell me that it took 6-7 hours to replace it. ha ha ha. If I had been able to do the job that day I cold have done it in 2 hours with my limited plumbing knowledge.
I tried to work it out with them, after consulting my attorney who said not to pay until i'm satisfied, but they insisted it took that long, BS, so we both parted ways to never end up doing business with each other again and without them being paid.
It's a free market, so use your $$$ where you feel it's best used.

 

Just doing that part now! Will post results later this afternoon, its Los Angeles/Pacific Time, wish me luck, tried the 02 sensor, nothing, light still comes on and off, mechanic said possibly a bad ECU? Not sure, am lost... Ran it this morning, and even cold I could come up to a light and 2 out of 3 times it would bog down to 400 rpm and dye.

 

Its how I feel, drove it for an hour, ran well, did not dye at any stops, a couple of occasions, it went below 900 rpm's, but did not dye once, so that is a relief and it is HOT in LA today, had the AC running for about 1/2 the time. But after 45 minutes, I got the Check Engine 5/8 on again.
WTF, I cant believe it. Ok the good news is that it did not dye, idle was ok, had a new speed sensor put on about a year ago, so dont think thats it at all cause when I need the speed sensor, it ran awful. I know nodoubt says to pull the codes, thinking its going to be my project for this afternoon or tomorrow, what a way to spend the day. Anyone have any thoughts, or should I just invest in a piece of black electrical tape and cover that friggin light?

 

OK, so you adjusted the throttle bypass valves such that you are no longer dying at lights, yes?!

Good.

But you still get a CEL?

First, keep in mind that you are driving a Ferrari. If you see a CEL, blip your throttle. Ferraris, especially 348's, hate to be lugging around town at less than 3000 rpms.

So if you blip your throttle and the CEL goes out, then change your driving style, not parts!

But yeah, if the CEL stays on, please...pull your codes!
