Hello All, shopping a Winter Rate engine out service for my 1995 spider. it's been a while since the last one! I spoke with three shops here in Chicago and wanted to be sure I'm comparing apples to apples where can i find a checklist for a comprehensive engine out service? One tech recommends: timing belts and bearings, water pump, valve adjustment, new cam seals, and end cover gaskets, filters fluids spark plugs accessory belts, coolant temp switch and expansion tank cap, and A/C recharge. Of course there can always be 'other items as discovered' but is this what would be considered a reasonable list of items? As always, appreciate any feedback from the Brotherhood. Steve
There's this and probably several others in the 348 section - after all folk having been doing majors on these cars for thirty years now https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/doing-a-major-90-348ts.262153/#post-139071536
How long is long? Shops have different standards and labor rates. Are you shopping price..or quality of work? There will always be surprises. 348 is really bad for the plastic timing covers snapping apart..full set is close to 3k..are you prepared? Hoses, cv boots, and so much more. A 6k quote and turn into 12k before you know it..
That is a reasonable list but as stated above, there is the clutch and plastic bits. There can be a number of things as it is taken apart. there is no hard answer. You just need to be ready to address issues as they arise and have a tech that you feel has your best interest in mind. I have things I will point out as a future issue and some that they can just live with and other stuff that just needs to be fixed. Most major services on older cars are all different. My best advice is to find a shop/tech that you trust and work with them. Understand they still need to make a living but not a killin'.
