So, got my engine out, thanks to Ernie's thread, look what I found! Image Unavailable, Please Login The shop that did the previous belt job put them in backwards and it was chewing up the belt!
Wow good catch. A) how many miles ago B) Was it an actual dealer or dedicated indie shop as opposed to import place that ohh by the way can also do Ferraris? Sent from my LM-Q710(FGN) using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Wow! Knuckleheads. At this point, I'd think "what else did these morons do, and I'd go through the whole timing drive. look for missing o-rings, or RTV where there should be none... sjd
Found a similar problem with my previous car. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/348-show-us-your-belts-and-bearings.523610/
It was done at an import Indy shop by the previous owner. It only has like 12k since the service, but it has been 7 years! Everything else looks good minus the water pump, it was the original an has 34000 miles on it and was leaking. I have been looking very closely.
That's a perfect example of... if you can't do it yourself (competently) then take it to the person who can. Good to see that you found the problem early enough. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the receipt, the previous owner paid over 10k for the job! I will have maybe 1300 in the job with a water pump. Plus the satisfaction of doing the job myself! Not to mention, knowing it was done correctly!
Well I'm glad I didn't personally pay for it. I really like fixing things myself. All to often the pros let me down.
It's a 91. I checked the serial number on that awhile back and mines was built after they were installing the updated bearing.
Not everything can be designed to be foolproof. If the tech is competent then that shouldn’t be an issue
I totally agree, I was just referring to the fact that the guide fits in that spot perfectly! But honestly, there is no reason to guess how to do something with so much information out there. I would have never attempted this job without all of the help I've gotten from reading threads here on Ferrarichat! The guys on here are a wealth of knowledge..
In any maintenance field there are you good techs, and your,,,,,,,,,,,. I work on automated storage and retrieval equipment in an ecommerce enviroment and there are a few of us that are the key to keeping the place running. We also have one that somehow still has a job and can BS like he knows what hes doing but hes the one Ive come behind many shifts to find things so simple but wrong it boggles my mind. In the industrial world those mistakes can be expensive, or one problem starts a chain reaction of problems and poof there goes 20k in 5 minutes. This is where talking to various people when you can and finding out who has a good reputation is important. The ones with a good reputation are the ones with pride in their work and wont risk shotty cheap repairs even when told to do those repairs. Ive heard so many shady things about my local Mercedes dealer its not funny and I have my own Xentry software and multiplexer.
What a most excellent write up and find! By any chance do you have a photo where the part correctly goes I might delve into to my own belt job this summer would just be good information to have.
Right above the cam gears where the belt wraps around. It's supposed ton prevent tooth skipping. Every parts diagram will show it. Sent from my LM-Q710(FGN) using FerrariChat.com mobile app
