Before extracting the pins, be sure to notate what color pin goes into what receptacle. Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is the extractor I needed to get the pins out of the connector. I used the one located at the 12 o'clock position on the tool. Notice that I bent the prongs in. This is needed to help keep the locking tabs, on the pins, pressed all the way down. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The extractor get inserted into the top and bottom, through the front on the clip, of the pin hole. Be sure to press the prongs all the way in. When you go to remove the pin it helps to first push the pin into the clip, then wiggling it out. You don't have to force the pins out. A little bit of wiggling and light pulling, and they should come right out. Again, remember to first push the pin further into the, THEN, pull it out. Would you look at that! It's a JPT pin!!!! From the factory even! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Okay lets get the others out and see if they are the same???? "YUUUUP !" All AMP Junior Power Timer pins. I checked all the clips that attached to the sensors in the engine, and they all had JPT pins. What in the hell was Ferrari thinking??? Why would they use weak junior timer pins on the ECUs, but JPowerTs on the sensors? Since both my harnesses had JPT pins on the sensor ends, I decided to leave them alone. Reinserted the pins, and replaced the boot. If you guys wanna tackle repining your sensor clips have at it. I just didn't wanna bother with it at this time, since they were already JPTs what would be the point. The hardest part of the whole thing are the T55 connectors. Since I have those finished I'm not even gonna sweat it. The sensor connectors will be a snap compared to the T55. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Moving on. The male pins on the Motronic 2.7 ECUs were in need of cleaning. After over two decades of use they had built up quit a bit of fretting corrosion. What would be the point of brand new JPT pins mating to old, crusty, corroded, dirty, Motronic ECU pins??? It wouldn't have been a good move. Dangit I couldn't get the cell phone camera to focus properly on the pins! Trust me, they were plenty dirty. Image Unavailable, Please Login
To clean the tin oxide/corrosion off the pins I went to Fry's Electronics and bought a little bottle of Deoxit D100L. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Using the brush, attached to the inside of the cap, I applied the Deoxit to the pins. I let it sit for a few minutes, per the instructions. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pull out one of the cleaning swabs, from the pack, and began cleaning the oxidation off the pins. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
This took me the better part of an hour to do. I had to clean one side of the pins, then turn The ECU over and clean the other side of 52 pins. Turn the ECU over again and repeat the process until I was satisfied both sides of the male pins were sufficiently nice and clean ready to make good contact with the new JPT pins. So there you have it kids. How to repin the Motronic 2.7 T55 connector/harness out of a 348, and how to clean the fretting corrosion/tin oxide off the Motronic ECU pins. Happy Wrenching, or should I say, pinning.
Great post, Ernie, thanks! I am always impressed with the DIY work taken on by the forum members. Are you planning on using Stabilant on the pins/connectors when you reconnect everything?
Nope. It makes too much of a mess. That and the DeoxIT also acts to help protect the surface. The main purpose it to remove the tin oxide that had built up over the years.
There is a bit of history here ... see: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q/326310-stooge-tin-pin-connector-kit.html
That is an old thread, and a dead horse. This thread is meant to HELP ANYONE planning on repining their ecu harness. It doesn't matter where they choose to buy their supplies, or how much they want to spend. This can help those choosing to use gold planted pins, silver plated pins, or tin plated pins. It is only a guide showing how I redid MY Motronic wiring harnesses, and is meant only to help those wishing to redo theirs.
Ernie this is an excellent thread. Even I feel that I could do this in my own garage. Like I want to! Mr. V bad trolling there. This is a place for helping hints not ranting.
You deserve an FChat Oscar for all the time you are putting into your DIY threads lately. Man, taking pictures like that is a gigantic pain in the rear, especially when you are trying to get a job done. Really appreciated.
Think so I just ordered the pins Doing the injector pins also, they suck right now Also need to find the 02 sensor connectors or I will just replace them with somethign more modern if I cant BTW thats a huge difference you have in clamping force, should work great
Excellent work as always. I'm curious whether there is a perceived difference in insertion force with the new pins. Have you maybe tried to compare how this connector snaps in compared to original one? Seems it would be more snug (a good thing).
nice work, but would have been a good time to solder them all wile the are out it only take a second to do and you never worry again.
I am having problem removing the pins from the connector without the proper extraction tools. Can someone point to one, or sell me one, or lend me one?
Assuming that you mean solder the wire to the pin vs. crimping? That would actually be a very BAD idea and if you did that you would likely have to worry about it AGAIN.
