hey guys, question here, i find when im out driving my 348 for a long period of time and i stop to fuel or just shut down for a few minutes and then go to restart i sometimes get a loud noise when cranking, i then turn key off and try again and she ll fire up. not a real loud noise [ hard to describe ] but i can feel the vibration in mid car. maybe starter banging sound or flywheel vibration, but only after a long drive, never when cold. any thoughts ?? car is having major service next week.

It's hard to say with out hearing the noise but I have had a 348 tb difficult to start when hot when cranking for longer than 4 seconds,It could possible be the voith flywheel lack of grease,The flywheel contains 230gr of grease from factroy they only fitted 180 gr ,Later in the future this starting causing a fault .
I know it sounds weird that lack of grease can cause this but I've see it done. Sometimes you get a noise from the engine like a kick back on the starter motor and it takes alot longer to start when hot.
I may be way off on your car but you just never know.

Possibly the starter solenoid is out of adjustment? When hot maybe it's possible for the solenoid mechanism to "throw" a little further and maybe the pinion is overshooting a little & fouling on something? The again maybe I've been sucking too many Tubis lately?

Do you hear or feel a rattle upon sutdown when hot? This is indicative of the flywheel grease issue.

If you're not waiting too long to restart and are successful, you may be in the beggining stages of losing the flywheel grease.

Remove the inspection panel from under the clutch housing and see or feel for any grease or oil. Sometimes the oil from the tranny bypasses the three seals on the output shaft and washes the grease from the FW.

I'm not a mechanic but I dealt with this "hot start" problem on mine. Repacked the FW and it ran like a champ.

Do a search for 348 hot start problem, I think in the old archives. There are pictures of what everything looks like and what it should look like.

    Hey John,

I think Vincent is on the right track with this one. Have a look at the flywheel. I had get a brand new flywheel when I first got my 348. Mine was so bad that the plastic guides holding the springs in place were cooked bad. I had someone else put it in. This was before I started doing my own work, so I really can't help you too much with it. However there are plenty of guys here that have repacked it themselves, and it isn't that big of a job. I wouldn't drive it any more until you find out what the deal is.
