there is a known problem with the chain tensioner pads and with early production year shaft bearings both near the same area. You need to do a careful diagnosis with a mechanics stethescope to feret out the noise. I person who knows of these two issues can help you narrow down your diagnosis. Some diy'er have just gone in during majors and refurbished these two issues just so that they will never be a problem. Do a search and both issues have been exhaustively identified and remedied at the diy level.

No, it's tensioned by spring pressure. Start by removing alt and a/c belts just to rule out other known problems. I'm about to start a post in the 348 section with regards to the chain parts. Depending on when your car was produced you could have old or no parts. The 348 has gone through four revisions on the oil pump chain tensioner with the latest being the 355 part. Early engines did not have the timing chain guide mounted to the block. The timing chain driven shaft also had known bearing oiling problems hence the TSB 10-34. Hey it's my 308th post. I'll be happier when I get to the 348th ;)
