Hi guys I wonder if anyone could shed some light on this???

I've just bought a replacement oil tank after damaging my existing one but I've noticed on the new one the oil temp sender is mounted on the bottom rather than on the side.

Was there a change in design somewhere along the way?? It doesn't look DIY but I can't find anything in the parts catalog to show 2 different designs. Mines a 1990 car and is similar to diagram below where part# 50 goes in. Ive also inccluded pics of new and old tanks.

Looks like a mondial T? I think that has base position. Not sure if GTB adopted that. I think it was space for the T, so 'probably' 'shouldnt' be an issue??

There wasn't a different spider set up - for GTB or for T? Not near my parts diagrams....

I think the 355 got different tanks for the M2.7 (I think only one for the M5.2). Not suggesting yours is 355, just that they do change stuff. What do the parts diagrams for Eurospares/ Maranello say? They often show the Euro, SAfrica, US variances as well as intra model changes. Sorry not more use.

Mine is exactly like tat too. Its the mounting on the bottom that i have never seen on any other tank and cant find in any catalog. Looks too neat to be diy and thers no trace on the side of where the old mounting would be. Totally foxed :-(

Gone through part manuals and books and no sign either. Maybe they got mixed up Fri on the 348 and T production run.... or you have a prototype from a LeMan version.... (more positive urban myth to start); unless Lancias had something on a delta or thema, I think you've got a genuine 'phenomenon'!?!

Not a 95 LHD Australian Spider version either, as there's one on eBay and it's as per original! Out of interest, how was it damaged?

I had a coming together with some armco after spinning the car exiting a roundabout :-(

Thankfully no major harm done so just in the process of repairing it myself. Should be up and running in the next few weeks :)

Glad you are ok. The bumper looks like a 'fun' project for a weekend (or 2) Didn't realise the oil tank sat back there - think that's the base I can see. PM me if you're getting rid of the broken tank.

Its an early tank Jeff. I believe they changed the position soon after launch. Looks like the early type oil cap too. Black plastic. Plus the angle looks different on the top of the early tank where the two rubber hoses connect. I noticed this a few years ago.

Cant imagine why they would want to change it. Probably a mistake by the fabricator. Lol. Earliest parts manual drawings I have (1990) appear to show side mount.

Is there better access from the side to replace without lifting the car? Or ability to replace without all oil draining? You'd empty the tank from below into a tray, but could remove the sensor and clean without it going in your eyes!?!?

Not sure if it maybe sits the temp sensor in a slightly better oil flow? Don't believe the mondial changed - might be a packaging issue... or quicker to make in the factory!

The 355 had both positions across the range, so if it's good enough for the 355 and mondial, should work fine on a 348;-)

Perhaps Ferrari originally fitted the temp sensor to the underside of the oil tank, and then one day a test driver spun the car up an armco barrier, ripping the temp sensor out, causing Ferrari to decide:

"We'd better move that sensor so it's less likely to get ripped out in an accident!"

    You never know! ;)
