I started this thread because i was interested why fellow Ferrari owners made their choice. I posted how I ended up with mine and if I would have ended up with a 348 I would have been just as happy. I really loved Ferrari's since I was a kid... I even read issues of Kitcar magazine dreaming about building a 308 or Testarossa. even as a foster kid I felt like someday somehow i would make it...After starting my own business I worked my ass off...first one of my dream cars..(mostly because i felt it was in reach) a 944....then on to a 993...then onto (one of my all time favorites) E46 M3..Then now a 97 355...I know a lot of guys on here could afford either so I was wondering about why you picked what you did...348 has a badA$$ look for sure...My 355 isnt perfect but it would take one of you guys to notice...even though there are lots of better cars all around me...New Camaros or even 911's I have the only Ferrari in the area and once you own one IMO nothing else will satisfy the hunger...Cool hearing all of your stories In someways for me it makes me feel like I made it...and I get to talk with really cool people about their cars and have some experience to back it

Agree. This is an excellent thread with good ideas on both sides, but what I do not like is when people start talking about the negative characteristics of either model.

I hate these threads which de-evolve into a mud fest. It shows such disrespect to the other owners who share this section. Both cars are great; both have their issues and you would have to be comatose to prefer either car for its modern looks. Compared to modern Ferraris, both cars might as well be Model T's. You may like the styling, but it's not current or modern by any stretch.

I personally resent the claim that the 348 is the worst looking Ferrari when there are many other examples of bad Ferrari styling. The Mondial is a mess, stylistically. The 365 humpback is ungainly. Many of the one-off designs are crazy ridiculous too.

I also resent the claim that all 355's are maintenance nightmares waiting to happen, that it's not if but when the guides, headers, cats, adjustable suspension, etc. (pick a component) fail.

Since it seems impossible to maintain a civil thread concerning the two models' differences, maybe we should just leave it alone, eh?

Besides, my SS is better than all your cars and Plug's and my 358 can wipe up the track with any of them. ;)

I got the 348 at a time that it suited my lifestyle. A youngish guy out on the town chasing the girls.

But over the years my life has changed and I have recently come out as gay and will soon be under going gender reassignment and shall be known as Doris.

Unfortunately, this means I will have to sell the 348 and find something more fitting in my new lifestyle. I will be picking up my new 355 next week.

I also own a 2008 Porsche 997s. I NEVER hear "my car is better than yours" from the Porsche guys. Even with the IMS problems.

    Dear Doris,

I'll take that testosterone-imbibed 348 off your hands. Good luck with the 355.

    Hugs and kisses,
    Andrew.

I always wanted a 348 spider so I bought it without ever driving one. I love the way it looks. It still looks great after all these years. I also enjoy the steering feel and the gated shifter. After 6 1/2 years I haven't had many issues other than needing a battery a few times. I found out my trickle charger wasn't working after a while.

As soon as I can afford it. I assure you the delays are not deliberate. ;)

I'm flying to the States in a few days to job hunt and get my career started. :)

I'm sure it's in good humor on here. If someone were really unreceptive to the banter, I'd hope folks wouldn't press it upon them and just keep it amongst those who enjoy it. Everyone knows the two cars each have their good and bad points, so you just pick what overall package you personally like best - and it's all subjective anyway. :)

The one who was serious about causing controversy was Luca di Montezemolo, who had marketing and political reasons for disparaging the 348, which deserved better from Ferrari's then President. But that sordid tale has been beaten exhaustively to death in many other threads...

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I never intended to start a pi$$ing contest...As a Ferrari lover why wondered why some chose one over the other..Most people on here could own either if they wanted. So that made me curious. I love both cars. the 355 seems a little smoother to the eye sort of sleek. The 348 looks like a bada$$ that came to town looking for trouble and if it couldnt find any would start some. I'm just grateful I have the experience..of all the people on the planet few will ever see a Ferrari...fewer will ride in one...and very few will ever own one. Enough said.

I could buy either one (or a 360 or ...) and recently bought a gorgeous looking black 348.

Basically like bjwhite: the 348 is better looking, its exterior is better looking, its interior is better looking (I don't like the gap in the F355's interior), its engine is wwaayy better looking, its rear trunk is better looking, I like the non-assisted steering, ...

I'm not going to say bad things about the F355: I'm sure it's fun to drive too...

But I see many arguments here in favor of the F355 which makes about zero sense today: you guys are comparing a car which came out in 1989 to its successor which came out five years later and saying "It has more hp, it handles better, it looks more modern"... Well, duh.

By that logic a 328 should be worth only a few cents and still by that logic you should all be selling your F355 and buying a 360 / 430 / 458 / 488 because "more hp and better handling is always better", right!?

    Very well put.

I guess the very fact that people are using "more power, better handling, more modern looks" to defend the 355 over 348 proves that these cars are not quite yet considered "classic".

Once they are considered "classic" in the same way 328-or-older cars are, it will be interesting to see which ends up more valuable, 348 or 355.

I would guess the 348 will be worth more as ultimate power becomes less relevent, tricky on-limit wet weather handling becomes totally irrelevent, while driver engagement and involvement become more and more desirable, not to mention lower production numbers and arguably stronger more iconic styling (although that will always be subjective).

and the Dino would be on a buy one get one free giveaway :D

On a slightly more serious note...... does anyone really car about the 348 v 355 performance figures. If you do, it's probably just for bragging rights. :D

Those performance figures are just numbers on paper and I bet most of them don't even match our cars now. Plus there are lots of faster and cheaper cars out there which we could buy, but we don't.

These two models are works of art. The kind of cars that are no longer made and will never be made again. That's what we should be celebrating.

Before choosing my 355, I learned from both the positive and negative comments. Kudos to this entire forum. (Except a few of you!)

Last 15 years I did some modification here and there and plan to do more. I think I will be able to enjoy it at least next 5 years. Can't wait to install electric power steering in my 348ts. I am aging.

Very well put, and made me chuckle :D

355 is definitely the prettier car.

I think both will age extremely well, but the unusual and rare look of the 348 will ultimately make it the more eye-catching and desirable classic in years to come.
