I've been saving for years, and have been doing some real estate deals on the side. and pretty soon i'll have enough "side money" to purchase myself a toy. I'm still not sure whether i'll actually put this money to purchase a car, or further reinvest. But i'm turning 24. Have no real expenses besides my 07 GTI, home is payed. One part of me wants to splurge and buy a fun car, other part of me wants to be "smart" and keep investing till i'm 30 and then enjoy life. we'll see which part wins.

now out of all the cars i've thought about, c6 z06, 996 turbo etc etc. only one car keeps bringing me back, it's the 348, i know many cars are way faster but that is not what i'm looking for. for me the car has to be fun to drive, and provoke emotions and be an experience, i've driven many cars. but only one ride in my uncle's new back then 94' 348 spider. i've driven another uncles 360 spider and the 348 experience plays in my head more often than the 360's.

so i'm slowly starting to look at the market, seeing what's out there.

but since i have not driven one. i need to read your impressions. how much fun is this car to drive? i'm sure with a few tweaks here and there the car must handle like a dream and sound great.

the mods i plan on doing

    18" lightweight wheels
    headers/exhaust
    suspension
    and racing seats

    thank you

The drive is best enjoyed with the windows down and the top off. Not blindingly fast accelleration, but very quick turning, good stopping power, and no power steering make you involved in the driving more than the other cars you mentioned. They smell good, look great, and are soooo much fun to drive, especially if the road is not straight! Go test drive a few, your decision will become easier then.

If I was that well off at 24, I'd go for an F430.

It drives like an oversize go kart.

Steering: Fantastic. Perfect feel with no corruption from power assistance. On the track it makes turning into corners very enjoyable

Handling: In the dry it is very neutral. Very good grip considerig the tire size and profile. In the wet you need to be careful when provoking the throttle as the tail will step out. Remember that there is no t/c to help you out. Handling will tend to oversteer when the tires get balder. Warning: Do not ever mix and match the tire brands.

Ride: Not bad at all. It is stiff of course but can handle bumps pretty well

Power: Merely adequate. About as fast as a Nissan 350Z. Decent torque means that you don't need to shift as much in city driving mode. Long throttle travel is fantastic - allows you to modulate the power easily. Great engine note - proper Ferrari stuff. It sounds quite bassy at lower rpms which then then switches to a higher pitched music at high rpms - lovely!

Brakes: Excellent - no fade on road or on 7/10 track day driving.

thanks for all the replies. yes at 24 my home (condo) is paid. i have a great job managing things for my father (had to earn my way in) and the rest is history. started doing small deals on the side from as young as 17, i made enough money to buy my first condo. renovated, made some good money on the sale. and been investing ever since. I'm not the type who would buy a ferrari to show off. this car is to fulfill a dream. it's just hard at my age to let go of such a large (to me) sum of money. I can keep investing and doing the deals i am and by 30 have enough income property and projects under my belt to easily afford the toy i want. but 30 is a long way away and it doesn't help that i saw a 348 tb yesterday which had some type of exhaust and lowered suspension, he gave it enough gas to make me forget my g/f was talking to me. haha

i'm also the type that enjoys the older cars because they are more raw and were "new" when i was a dreamer. so it's sort of a sentimental thing. plus moving up, getting a 348, enjoy it for a year or two, then get a 355, sell that, get a 360 (by then they have depreciated enough that i won't lose money on the sale) then 430 etc etc.

so i will always buy the models that have depreciated the most, so that i will not lose money on sales, or lose very little. Point in case, i'm selling my uncles 360 spider a 2003 model for 230 000, fully loaded, whoever buys it, in 5 years that car will have depriciated another 70 000, even if i could afford to lose that much, it wouldn't sit too well with me. so older cars for the win!

The drive is raw, it gets under your skin, it is involving, you have to work at it. My other car is a 03 996 Carrera 4s. That is a great car that is so easy to drive silly fast. The combination of 4wd and porsches PSM makes it a no brainer to push hard with kid gloves. But, compared to the 348, it feels anesthetized.... If you are a car guy, there is no way you'll regret the 348 decision.

The only downside I see to the 348 is the major service maintenance cost.
It has depreciated about as far as its going, maybe 10k more ? IE less than a new luxury car.
They say that youth is wasted on the young.
Dont waste yours; buy the car if thats what you love.

Ara: Does your home have secure parking? If not I'd suggest sticking with a car that attracts a bit less attention.

In terms of your question though I find the 348 to be an very entertaining if you get it out on smooth roads with plenty of curves. I don't enjoy it in traffic or commuting. The ts model is prone to flexing on rough roads, and if I recall you have a few of those in your area.

    hehe, thanks guys.

unfortunately we have too many bad roads here. whatever car i get, will be used couple of times a week, but used properly. meaning making the trip to the mountains and having a blast. giving my car an italian tuneup every time i start it. My current car (modded 07 gti) kept up with a 348 that was pushing it, but not sure if he was at 100% throttle. i ran 103 in the 1/4 mile, and my car to me is sufficient when it comes to speed. so the 348 is minimum as quick as mine, plus 10000x more fun to drive, won't be disapointed. if i wanted a pure speeding car, i'd get the new z06. amazing car. but not my cup of tea for now.

i know you're young only once. but i have a lot on my mind, and want to achieve a lot. just like my father who's made it from nothing. so spending the money when i dont NEED to is kinda scary. i don't want to let go of the money. i have achieve a lot in my early years, from losing a 100 lbs, to getting back on track in school, to helping my father in his business', to doing my own real estate deals on the side.

but you never know. all it takes it one second to change your mind. i will be driving my uncles 360 spider for a day or two next week, it helps motivate me, it really makes me focus, it's weird.

you guys have amazing cars. wow, pap, your car makes me feel all silly :D
