OK, I'm likely going to put new brake pads onto my 1990 348 this coming weekend. The "brake" light has been on intermittenly on start-up, the pedal feels lousy, and even a visual check looks like the pads are 95% gone.

Any tips, techniques I should be concerned with? Any ABS particulars? Any "preferred" fluid brands? Any preferred pads?

    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Hi Daniel. For the front pads, Porsche 90 Carrera 2/4, and 85-88 944 turbo pads should be the same as for the 348, verify to be sure. Then there's EBC "greenstuff" (Tirerack) which some have tried with seemingly mixed results. Make sure you remove some fluid from the reservoir before pushing back the calipers to remove the old pads, and then bleed the brakes afterward using both the inboard AND outboard bleed screws on each caliper going from farthest away to closest to the fluid reservoir. A few pics as you go along would be great as others may have the same questions. Good luck.

I'm replacing my pads tomorrow (20 minute job) and I bleed the system every year. Just did it in April for VIR. I put in Porterfield R4-S pads in April but can't get rid of the low speed LOUD squeal so I'm going to put the previous pads back in. They are like new anyway.

If you want to come to Graham, I'll help you do the whole job.

    Bob -

You might have a deal here! Did you get pads at FCI? I talked to Dave Sodequist on Friday, and he only had Brembo and ATE -- they were outrageously expensive... almost $300 an axle. I was thinking about Greenstuff, but I don't know where I'd get them in time for a R&R tomorrow. Ideas?

What time are you going to get started?

I ordered the Porterfield pads direct from their place in Costa Mesa, CA, at $89/axle plus $22.57 shipping for a total of $200.57. It took 2 days to get them. Maybe you want to do this in combination with scouting out the Bermuda Run rally route.

Speaking of squeal, with 6,700 miles my 92' does this at low speed also. Usually after some hard braking, Why? Should I try some of that anti squeal spray? Or change pads?

I tried the spray on the rotors and put silicone grease on the pad backings twice to try to stop the squeal. Worked for a few miles. The squeal comes at the very end of a slow stop - loud. I'm putting other pads back on to see if they squeal now, but won't be able to test until rain stops tomorrow. Then I'll try a couple things with the Porterfields. I had put the Porterfields on a few weeks before a track weekend and the squealing started while at the track.
